Why Enchong Dee no longer makes New Year’s Resolutions

Time check: Another year is almost here. But, before we close the door on 2018, there’s one last thing to take care of – New Year’s resolutions! And even Pinoy celebrities are no exception to this as they too reflect on their aspirations.

Except for swimmer-actor Enchong Dee. In a recent interview with Bulletin Entertainment, he revealed he stopped making those three years ago.

“I believe that whatever resolutions I want to do in my life, I can start doing it any time of the year,” came the simple explanation.

Enchong’s main goal in recent years (and also this New Year) has always been to stay healthy.

“I remember, like, in 2017, I got sick six times. But I’m so happy this year that I didn’t get any fever, cough or whatever illness. So I want to continue that. I also make sure to pamper myself from time to time.”

The 30-year-old revealed he will invest in more businesses. This includes having another branch of Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar, of which he is brand ambassador. The homegrown restaurant recently found a new home owned by Bryan Tiu at the Venice Grand Canal mall.

“Peri-Peri is such an easy place to get lost in. There’s the satisfaction of eating great-tasting food, the upbeat energy that grabs you the moment you step inside, and the passionate colors that entice – these things create such a distinct atmosphere. I hope in the coming years, we will continue to grow and excite more tastebuds, the way only Peri-Peri can,” he said.

Born in the year 1988, Enchong’s Chinese Zodiac animal is Dragon. Asked what qualities he got from it, he mouthed “determination.”

Proud Pinoy

We asked Enchong to share his thoughts on the alleged “Aussie ownership” of some Australian tabloids to Filipina Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.

Note that few days after the coronation night, an Australian media outlet also took pride in Catriona’s win, even crossing out “Philippines” from its headline to replace with “Queensland.”

The beauty queen was born and raised in Cairns, Queensland to Scottish-born Australian father, Ian Gray, from Fraserburgh, and Filipino mother Normita Ragas Magnayon from Oas, Albay.

Since Enchong is considered Filipino-Chinese, has he ever experienced identity crisis?

“Never,” he shot back. “For me, I’m 100% Filipino and I am proud of that. I can tell the whole world that I’m a proud Filipino.”

He weighed in on the subject.

“I think it’s a matter of who invested in you more, who groomed you. We can tell that it’s the Filipinos who molded, practiced Catriona for the pageant. So we can really claim more on her win.”

Goes with ‘empathy’

Enchong is among local celebrities against bullying. The subject was brought up in light of the recent Ateneo bullying incident though the actor spoke in general terms on the matter.

He recalled he also once figured in a fistfight, something he is not “proud” to share.

“I pushed my classmate to the trash can,” he said. “I feel sad every time I remember that.”

Enchong said empathy is very important to him.

“I can advice the bullies to, you know, try to understand that particular person you want to bully. Try to be in his/her shoes. At the end of the day, everything goes with maturity.”

ABS-CBN, UAAP renew partnership

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines will remain a Kapamilya for another full decade.

ABS-CBN and the country's premier collegiate league formally inked another 5-year deal Wednesday to continue the partnership that molded varsity players into stars and household names.

ABS-CBN President and CEO Carlo Katigbak together with UAAP president Nilo Ocampo of Season 81 host National University and the league’s Board members led the contract signing held at Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

"ABS-CBN did its part in making the different sporting events really exciting and accessible to the millions of UAAP fans not only throughout the Philippines but elsewhere in the world," said league president Mateo.

The new contract will be effective when the Ateneo de Manila University hosts Season 82.

ABS-CBN started airing UAAP events 19 years ago and the league got a serious shot in the arm on its growth, promotion and reach through comprehensive broadcast.

Part of the extension will have the full commitment of ABS-CBN to feature other sports aside from the popular basketball and volleyball through different platforms. The UAAP has 15 sports disciplines in the men’s, women’s and high school divisions.

“ABS-CBN will be increasing the coverage of the games that we will have. Not just for basketball pati na rin ang women’s volleyball, as you know is doing very well, men’s volleyball and pati na rin ang football,” said March Ventosa, head of ABS-CBN Narrowcast.

“We will keep exploring their game lineup to see which of the sports are worth full coverage,” he added.

ABS-CBN through its sports channel S&A 23 and S&A HD will again be the home of UAAP while some games will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2.

All televised games will also be available via live streaming at sports.abs-cbn.com.

SPORTS AND MORE | AksyonTV redefines action as “5 Plus”

5’s sister channel AksyonTV is set to relaunch as 5 Plus on January 13, 2019 and will be primarily serving entertainment, lifestyle, news, sports and sports-related content.

5 Plus will feature action in the form of a wide variety of atypical sports coverage on TV, on stream, and on social media catering to a younger, more adventurous, more diverse millennial audience.

The new channel will highlight extreme sports, collegiate sports, e-sports, sports entertainment, and more to complement 5’s main channel; which will continue to promote more mainstream sports like basketball, volleyball, and boxing, among others.

AksyonTV’s rebrand into 5 Plus reinforces the channel’s core commitment: to share stories for Filipinos around the world to be inspired by and be passionate about; stories that champion the Filipino fighting spirit.
