Pia Cayetano wants cyclists exempted from mandatory face shield rule

Sen. Pia Cayetano on Tuesday urged the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on COVID-19 to exempt cyclists and joggers from the mandatory wearing of face shields, saying the transparent head gear could cause accidents.

Cayetano, a former national athlete and a triathlete, issued the appeal a week after the national government said face shields - just like face masks - are now required to be worn in all public areas.

"As a cyclist, I’m very concerned about the safety of fellow cyclists being required to use face shields," Cayetano said in a tweet.

"This could drastically impair their vision and perception of space, which may lead to accidents," she said.

The senator also urged the IATF to allow joggers not to wear face shields when they are in open spaces.

"Recognizing the role of exercise in promoting mental and physical health, I also ask the IATF to exempt joggers from the requirement when jogging in open spaces, provided they observe social distancing measures," she said.

Health experts earlier questioned the policy of wearing face shields in public, saying it could impair breathing for some people.

"Equipment alone will not protect us from COVID-19, even with the face shield and face mask. It's important to follow guidelines to protect us from the coronavirus infection," infectious disease expert Benjamin Co said in an earlier interview.

"I think they should review the recommendations," he said.

UAAP hopes to open Season 84 in September 2021

The UAAP is targeting a "traditional opening" for its upcoming season, after being forced to cancel Season 83 for health and safety reasons.

UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag acknowledged that at the moment, there have been no discussions so far regarding the target opening date for Season 84.

"But kung walang discussion, we stay with the default which is the traditional opening. And that's September of 2021, if all goes well," he said in a press conference, Thursday.

"Hopefully, the vaccines are here, and we have better protocols, the situation has improved. So that's the target, the traditional opening," he added.

The UAAP Board of Managing Directors and Board of Trustees can still make adjustments, Saguisag added.

The league terminated Season 82 in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with several events left unfinished -- including the highly popular women's volleyball tournament. Other competitions, including athletics, did not even start.

While everything remains up in the air, Saguisag is doubtful that the league will hold a preseason, citing the risks involved in setting up such a competition.

"We are preparing for next season," he stressed.

As for the eligibility of the student-athletes, that has yet to be discussed as well by the various stakeholders.

"All eligibility matters na affected for Season 83 will be tackled at the proper time," said Saguisag. "Right now, we will definitely sit down and discuss each and every nuance."

"The Board of Managing Directors has a history of being responsive and dynamic, and now we also have another layer of wisdom with the Board of Trustees. So I am confident that we will come up with the right adjustments to address the concerns of everyone," he added.

Though Season 83 will not be held -- the first time a UAAP season has been cancelled since World War II -- Saguisag said it will not be stricken from the record books. "We cannot just skip a season," he explained. The league, when it returns, will hold Season 84.

Basketball: Thirdy rusty in return, as NeoPhoenix snaps skid

Thirdy Ravena returned to the basketball court on Saturday, as his team San-En NeoPhoenix picked up a 83-69 blowout win against Levanga Hokkaido in the Japan B.League.

Ravena, who has recovered from COVID-19, had yet to get his conditioning back, showing signs of rust after being sidelined for 2 weeks.

The former UAAP superstar scored 5 points to go with his 3 rebounds and a couple of assists.

He caught the virus on November 27, and when he recovered was allowed to join team practice.

Stevan Jelovac led the way for NeoPhoenix with 21 points to break the slump and improve the team's record to 3-17.

San-En will play Levanga again on Sunday.

Enchong not taking it against stars who jump ship

In a recent digital conference, Enchong Dee said that he understands fellow Kapamilya talents who opted to accept job offers from other networks. He stated that he can’t blame them for simply looking for jobs.

“They need to work in order to earn. A lot of my contemporaries are breadwinners. Considering the shutdown of ABS-CBN and the difficulties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, you can’t take it against them if they do projects for other TV stations,” he related.

It is public knowledge that at present, many Kapamilya stars can be seen appearing in shows produced by other networks, particularly, TV 5. Some of these stars include Piolo Pascual, Maja Salvador, Catriona Gray, Billy Crawford, Jake Cuenca, Ian Veneracion, Dimples Romana, Alex Gonzaga, Pokwang, Ria Atayde, Beauty Gonzales, Miles Ocampo, and Maris Racal.

Meanwhile, some also decided to leave Star Magic like Julia Barretto and McCoy de Leon who recently inked a contract with Viva Artists Agency. Bea Alonzo has also sought new management after 19 years with the Kapamilya’s talent management arm.

As for Enchong, he still remains loyal to ABS-CBN.

“Yes, for 15 years! But actually, during these critical times, I’ve realized that you can’t measure loyalty by staying in your mother studio. As I’ve said, times are hard and everybody needs to earn a living. It just so happened that I was able to prepare before the pandemic hit.”

Kenya’s Kandie smashes half marathon world record in Valencia

Kenya’s Kibiwott Kandie smashed the half marathon world record by 29 seconds on Sunday, becoming the first person to break 58 minutes at the Valencia Half Marathon.

Kandie, who finished second at the world half marathon championships in Gdynia in October, finished the Spanish annual race in 57 minutes and 32 seconds, breaking the previous record of 58:01 set by compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor in September 2019.

“I can’t believe it, I have beaten Kamworor’s world record by half a minute,” Kandie said. “Today is a great day for me and also for Kenya.”

The top four men all ran under the previous world best, with Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda finishing second in 57:37, Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto third in 57:49 and Kenyan Alexander Mutiso taking fourth place in 57:59.

Kandie, 24, led the chasing pack, which included reigning world champion Kiplimo, through the 15-kilometer mark in 41:10.

The pair traded the lead over the next six km before Kandie made the decisive move, to finish more than a minute off his previous personal best of 58:37.

Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba won the women’s race in 1:05:18, setting the fastest time for a debut over the distance.

Woods’ Hall of Fame induction on hold until 2022 due to COVID-19

Tiger Woods’ induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame will have to wait, after organizers said they were postponing the 2021 ceremony until the following year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 15-time major winner will be inducted alongside 11-time LPGA winner Susie Maxwell Berning, former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and the late Marion Hollins, who broke barriers as one of the few female developers of golf courses in the sport’s history.

The honorees, who were announced earlier this year, will be inducted as the Hall of Fame class of 2022, a spokeswoman said.

“Given the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, moving the ceremony back a year will give us a better opportunity to properly recognize and honor this important class,” World Golf Foundation CEO Greg McLaughlin said in a statement.

“We look forward to shining a light on their achievements and inspiring future golfers around the world through this ceremony and celebration.”

The induction ceremony will take place March 9, 2022, during the Players Championship.

Cone refers to Tenorio, Devance and Dillinger as ‘geezers’—old men who carried fight for Gin Kings in Game 4

Against an enemy that has enviable depth, Barangay Ginebra turned to its championship experience and put together a masterclass on both ends to move on the cusp of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) history.

The Gin Kings are now a win away from winning a truly extraordinary Philippine Cup, and coach Tim Cone has his “old geezers,” particularly LA Tenorio, to thank.

“You can’t count out experience, you can’t count experience in the [title] playoffs,” Cone said on the heels of Ginebra’s 98-88 Game 4 conquest of TNT on Sunday night at Angeles University Foundation powered by Smart 5G where the Gin Kings took a 3-1 lead.

Tenorio put the Gin Kings on his back, finishing with a team-best 22 points, six assists, three steals, while highlighting his massive performance by engaging the Tropang Giga’s Roger Pogoy in a shootout down the stretch.

There was no secret to Tenorio’s sensational performance. Though he did admit there was a bit of a tweak with the way he and his teammates approached the contest: Ginebra simply wanted to bare its teeth.“We had to be aggressive,” he told reporters on the way to his hotel room. “The last game, we were playing to protect the lead. We were not playing to win.

“In this series, it is our experience which is really our advantage,” Tenorio said. “We have players who really played a lot of championship games like Joe [Devance], Jeff [Chan], Jared [Dillinger].”

Devance and Dillinger started for the crowd darlings for the first time here, and that was something Cone thought would nullify TNT’s dependence on Troy Rosario, who in the previous contest came through for the Tropang Giga.

“We had a definitive game plan coming in with those guys,” Cone said. “We were making jokes about it, they said it’s going to be the ‘geezers lineup.’” They average about 35 years old in that lineup.

“It was obvious, [how] we wanted to keep [Troy] from trying to pin us down to the basket like he did in Game 3,” Cone explained.

Devance and Dillinger, who have a combined 16 PBA titles, accounted for eight and seven points, respectively—with most coming in the middle two quarters where the Kings established their character.

Ginebra scooted ahead by as many as 17 points, just the right buffer that it needed to blunt Pogoy’s 34-point performance—and a string of three triples heading into the waning minutes that narrowed the gap to just three and gave the Tropang Giga a legitimate chance to pull it out.

By then, Tenorio had already saved enough energy to unload haymakers himself: back-to-back triples and a jumper to swing the lead back to 10 with under a minute left to play.

“That’s our composure,” Tenorio said of his team’s calmness toward the end. “I have to also [commend] Joe and Jared. They started the game and they played really well.

“They don’t get to play that much but whenever they’re needed, they’re ready,” he added. “That’s the experience [we take pride in]. We have veterans, leaders who are really big for this team.”

“It could be harder to respond. It’s easier to make shots, it’s harder to respond. But that’s what LA did—two huge responses from the three-point line. That kind of took the sails out of TNT,” Cone said of his foremost playmaker, who seems to be peaking just as some have begun sputtering inside an extended stay in the bubble.

Tenorio, who had an appendectomy just two weeks before he entered the PBA’s self-contained zone here in Clark Freeport, averaged 6.6 points and 4.1 assists in the eliminations. Through four games in this championship series, the pint-sized guard cranked those norms up to 14.5 and 6.2 and is a prime candidate for Finals MVP.

TNT, meanwhile, has found itself walking on thinner ice after losing Jayson Castro early in the third period on Sunday. The club’s fleet-footed star aggravated a left knee injury and wasn’t able to return.

And there was Tropang Giga coach Bong Ravena ruing his charges’ effort on the floor: “I don’t know if maybe we were tired or what, but we were like a step behind Ginebra.”

Castro joins two-way guard Ray Parks Jr. (calf strain) at the end of TNT’s bench, both listed as day-to-day by team officials and reducing the Tropang Giga’s main guns to just Pogoy, Rosario and Poy Erram, whose admirable showing throughout these Finals has been eclipsed by the team’s three losses.

But the Tropang Giga aren’t throwing the towel—and they’re not expected to, anyway.

“It’s not yet over,” Ravena said. “Ginebra still needs to win one more game. We just have to show that we want it more than them. That’s our situation right now. We have to play through it, as our backs are against the wall. We just have to put all out on the floor.”

“We’re still hopeful,” Pogoy said. “I know we’re going to fight it out to the end of the series.” INQ

‘Mr. Budgetarian’ as a businessman

Show business is a paradox: it can be lucrative one day, but provide no source of income the next. Enchong Dee knew this from the get-go, and luckily, was equipped to handle the situation, having been raised by parents who taught him how to handle money especially amid a financial crisis.

“Looking back, when I started earning money, my motivation was ‘How will the quality of my life improve?’” Enchong said. “Therefore all of the things I spent on are basically for my security, my comfort, and to improve of the quality of my life. Doon ko siya lahat nilagay, so up to now, I feel that I am reaping the benefits of all the right things I did 10 years ago.”

As Enchong’s showbiz career gained traction, his finances eventually allowed him to venture into other income-generating pursuits. Apart from his showbiz gigs, he is currently involved in agri-business, real estate, as well as the food franchise industry. He complements his active income with financial instruments such as an insurance policy with an investment component, a health protection insurance, as well as mutual funds. For such needs, he relies on Sun Life Philippines. His situation and needs have inspired Sun Life to create the Negosyante Starter Pack for entrepreneurs and freelancers like him who want to fund both their business and personal goals.

The Negosyante Starter Pack is a bundle of Sun MaxiLink 100 life insurance and Sun Life Prosperity Achiever 2028 mutual fund, with rates that start at P4,000 per month. These products can help one be a step closer to a brighter future, just like Enchong.“As I focus on my career and my businesses, it’s important for me to have a trusted partner covering my back,” he shared. “I’m glad I have Sun Life as my

For Enchong, it’s not right to judge actor’s loyalty to network in time of pandemic

Enchong Dee

As far as ABS-CBN contract artist Enchong Dee is concerned, opting to stay with the beleaguered network or finding work elsewhere shouldn’t be the only two things people use as gauge in determining the loyalty of a Kapamilya talent.

The country would keep GMA, PTV, TV5 and Net 25 are the sole free-to-air TV channels or networks, while the world would keep Facebook as the social networking site.

On May 5, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a Cease and Desist Order (CDO) against ABS-CBN to stop broadcasting on its free-to-air channels.

On July 10, the House Committee on legislative franchises overwhelmingly rejected ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal application.

While for Multiply was closed last May 6, 2013 and ceasing all business operations on May 31, 2013 along with the official online channels for the site had been removed along with all their content, including its YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, after years of financial and managerial turmoil and following a failed bid to reinvent itself from being a social networking site to a vibrant e-commerce destination in Southeast Asia and filed for bankruptcy on June 10, 2014.

“One of the things that I realized was that it’s not right to judge people in relation to loyalty at a time like the present. A lot of my colleagues are breadwinners. You can’t take away from them the opportunity to work elsewhere, especially now that we’re battling a pandemic and our home network has shut down,” the actor pointed out.

Enchong said the fact that he decided not to accept any work from rival networks like GMA 7 or TV5 does not make him any better than other Kapamilya artists who chose to do so.

“I’m very fortunate that I was able to invest my money as early as 15 years ago, when I was just starting work in show biz. This was because I refused to feel complacent,” Enchong said during the virtual media conference to launch him as the ambassador of Sun Life’s Negosyante Starter Pack, a policy for entrepreneurs and freelancers like Enchong who want to fund both their business and personal goals.

Enchong explained that actors like him “should be able to make their money grow in such a way that they will have financial freedom in the future. So as early as 17, I made up my mind that I would work to achieve that freedom later on,” he explained. “So now, even with all that’s happening, I wasn’t worried where I’d get the money to pay for my bills and rent. It’s because I’ve invested my money properly.”

He further said: “It wasn’t so hard for me to decide whether to transfer networks or not. Show business is only a certain part of who I am. I have other concerns and interests apart from being an actor.”

However, Enchong said he doesn’t carelessly invest his hard-earned money in any business. He makes sure to first do research on the field he wishes to venture into. “Also, we don’t know how long this pandemic will last so we should be very conservative with our spending and in approaching our business goals, and somehow, our personal goals, too,” he said.

Aside from his restaurants (Enchong owns 18 branches of Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar nationwide) and real estate businesses, he has let on that he would be venturing into the shrimp farming business, too. “It’s something new to me, as well. I still don’t know if I have the eye for it or if I would have the same passion for it as I had for my other businesses. That’s why I’m still studying it. I just know that food will always be a necessity. Also, the Philippines still lacks the knowledge and skills in terms of farm produce,” he added. “Remember, passion is not enough, but it’s a good first step. You also have to work on making sure you know what you’re doing.”

When it comes to his “personal goal,” Enchong said it’s to share the blessings he has been receiving. “This became more important for me to achieve at this time of pandemic,” he said. “I would often pray to God to make me His bridge to reach out to people in need. I feel that in 2020, this prayer got fulfilled. Sinuntok talaga tayo ng sobra. I’m glad that I was able to use my status to help people, especially those who were greatly affected by the pandemic and the typhoons.”

Enchong said he was grateful that none of his relatives and friends were gravely affected by Typhoon “Ulysses” that ravaged Bicol region. Enchong grew up in Naga City, Camarines Sur. “I want to put up a commercial building in Naga soon. I want to create opportunities for people living there. As for my personal dream as a show biz personality, I want to be able to host a game show, and act in a biopic,” he declared.

“Alter Me,” the RC delos Reyes romantic-comedy that features Enchong alongside Jasmine Curtis-Smith is currently being streamed on Netflix.

Enchong regards this project as something that showcases how much he has “improved and grown as an actor.” Opposite Jasmine’s character Aimee, an uptight human resources executive, Enchong plays Uno, a guy who moonlights as a pay-for-play sex worker to make both ends meet.

“I have to be able to offer my followers something new every now and then in order to keep them interested,” Enchong explained. “I’m just thankful that this movie was released at a time when the demand for new content is so high but it’s so difficult for us to come up with new ones. I feel proud not just because I have a Netflix movie, but also because it’s something that people really took time to watch.”

He then said that part of his personal goal was to “take out the fear of what other people will say, or what image or brand I would have after people see this movie. Once I say ‘yes’ to something, I bring my whole self into that project. I’m more inspired now because I was able to play a new character. I’m OK with being called ‘Pantasya ng Bayan.’ It’s much better than being called a bold star,” he said, laughing.
