Many personalities who reacted over Ironman 70.3

Dennis Antenor, Jr.
For Dennis Antenor, Jr., the voice behind the entire Manila Broadcasting Company, it recall the news program DZRH Network News covered the Ironman 70.3 Philippines in Cebu last year.

He cannot insult ABS-CBN celebrities Piolo Pascual and Enchong Dee, because the two of them was at Harrison Plaza in Manila for a thanksgiving mass.

He quoted "I have never afraid to die", it said to reporters after the press conference

PIOLO Pascual is back in Cebu for today’s Ironman, his fifth year of participating. He brought with him his son Iñigo.

Enchong Dee and Bubbles Paraiso are also in Cebu as they form part of Sun Life Financial’s team in the athletic event.

Aside from giving financial assistance to its clients, Sun Life Financial also promotes health and wellness, hence, its 5th year of participation in the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship 2018.

The insurance company presented its athletes in a press conference last Friday at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.

“After all, at Sun Life, our promise is to help our clients achieve brighter life, and that’s not simply about enjoying lifetime financial security, but also living a healthier life,” said Benedict Sison, Sun Life chief executive officer and country head.

Sison said the team is composed of Sun Life executives, employees and brand ambassadors, as well as the team’s flag bearer, Kapamilya actor Pascual.

“As we follow their Ironman journey, I hope they’ll be able to inspire more people to also pursue their health and wellness,” said Sison.

Pascual, who has been with the Sun Life Tri Team for half a decade, motivated his fellow tri-athletes for today’s event. He will take the bike leg.

“I just wanna encourage all the athletes to not give up,” 41-year-old Pascual said.

He also challenged his son, Iñigo, to join the triathlon next year.

Aside from Pascual, Enchong Dee, the newest brand ambassador, is also going to participate in the event as he will kick off the action in the swim stage.

Dee, a former national tanker, encouraged the sports enthusiasts as he shared with them the secret in finding the right sport for them.

“I always say that look for the one that you really fall in love with so that hindi mo lang sya gagawin dahil ito yong uso or ito yong may (you don’t just do it because it’s a fad or because it’s an) endorsement. Parang I wanna do it because I feel better with that sport. I feel healthier with that sport, and I inspire people with that sport,” said Dee.

Having the same goal with Sun Life Financial, Wilfred Uytengsu, Sunrise Events Inc. chief executive officer, shared how he appreciates his partnership with Sun Life since both companies embrace the same ideal of a healthy and active lifestyle.

Sunrise Events Inc. is the organizing team of the Ironman 70.3.

Uytengsu emphasized that the Ironman event is one way of increasing the sports tourism in the Philippines.

“To give Filipinos a chance to raise the Ironman brand. To help the Philippines with sports tourism. To prove that here we can run first class, world-class events,” said Uytengsu.

For his part, Sison said that Ironman has been a great venue for Sun Life to promote its goal in health and wellness.

Mylene Lopa, Sun Life Financial chief marketing officer, enumerated some of the financial products that the company provides to its clients, and introduced its latest product: Sun Fit and Well. This provides health coverage from prevention, diagnosis, treatment until the rehabilitation stage.

“This product, we don’t just give you money to get better, we also give you money to prevent you from getting sick. It has a prevention benefit component that allows the clients in this product to participate in all health classes for free,” Lopa explained.

The Sun Life Triathlon Team is fielding a total of 13 racers. It is one of more than 300 teams competing in this much-anticipated race of the year.

Regent Aguila Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific 2018 starts at 5:30 a.m today.

FOCUS ON BIKE LEG

Ironman organizers putting more personnel on new bike route for safety reasons

Safety will once again be the primary concern of the organizers of the Regent Aguila Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships, which will be held today in the cities of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue.

Among the safety concerns in this swim-bike-run race is the new bike route, which will use narrower roads than the old route used in the past six editions.

Because of this, organizers decided to deploy more personnel along the route to make sure that the participants will be safe.

“Basically, there are first responders, in terms of medical teams. We have ambulances from ERUF, the Cebu province, and from both LGUs of Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue,” said Sunrise Events Inc. general manager Princess Galura.

Galura added that they also kept on reminding participants about the hazards of the new route.

SEI’s CEO Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, during the race briefing yesterday, again brought up the concern and gave his advice to the participants.

“The new bike course will be a little more narrow so be alert and keep your eyes out. Be alert all throughout the race,” he said.

A total of 2,571 triathletes from 52 countries will be competing in the triathlon that starts and finishes at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.

This is the seventh year Cebu is hosting the prestigious race, but this will be the first time that the Cebu South Coastal Road (CSCR) won’t be used as part of the bike route.

Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña didn’t allow the use of the CSCR because of traffic congestion concerns, forcing organizers to keep the route within Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City only.

To secure the race course and ensure the safety of both the participants and the spectators, Lapu-Lapu City will field in 800 Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel and 600 marshals along the race course.

All in all, Galura estimated that there will be 3,000 personnel coming from PNP, the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Coast Guard, various medical teams and groups, marshals and force multipliers, bulk of which will be deployed in the bike route.

“What you notice right now is that there’s a strong presence of the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Coast Guard which are both here for the race, while the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7) Regional Director Chief Supt. Debold Sinas already said that there will be 800 PNP personnel that will be deployed for the race so everything’s ready and what we are just waiting right now is the race to happen,” said Galura.

Choppy seas Weather today, according to Kim Atienza, will be hot and windy.

“At 6 a.m. during the start of the race, the temperature will be 30 degrees Celsius. And at 9 a.m. during the bike leg, it will rise to 34 degrees Celsius.

At 10 a.m. during the run all the way to noon, [temperature] will go up to 36 degrees Celsius. The index humidity is at around 80 percent, so it’s going to be hot and windy because of the southwest monsoon or habagat that brings strong winds,” Atienza said in the race briefing.

Because of this, Uytengsu gave a warning to participants during the swim leg.

“It’s gonna be a great race, but I want to point out that it’s going to be a choppy swim. If you’re not a great swimmer, do not panic,” he said. “Safety first.”

There will be 38 professional triathletes competing in today’s race, all gunning for slots to the Ironman 70.3 World Championships that will be held in Nice, France, later this year.

Best, brightest dispute 70.3 AsPac crown

LAPU-LAPU City—The cream of the crop slug it out in a furious battle for triathlon supremacy in the Regent Aguila Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships which fires off today (Sunday) at Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa here with Aussie Tim Reed gunning for his third regional crown and compatriot Melissa Hauschildth seeking back-to-back titles.

Reed, the 70.3 AsPac champ in 2015 and 2016, goes for No. 3 against a powerhouse cast of men’s pros headed by reigning Ironman AspPac king Braden Currie of New Zealand, three-time full distance IM winner Tim Van Berkel, recent Davao Ironman 70.3 champ Mauricio Mendez of Mexico, 2017 IM AsPac boss Josh Amberger of Australia, and five-time world titlist Craig Alexander, also of Australia.

“My training hasn’t been quite what I have wanted but I’ll come out there to fight for whatever finish, you know. If it’s 10th place, third or first, I’m just happy to race and really looking forward (to compete against a world-class field),’ said Reed on the eve of the Sunrise Events, Inc.-organized race dubbed “The Crown Jewel of Asia” and awarding pearl-studded “Perlas ng Silanganan” medals created by renowned designer Kenneth Cobonpue.

The elite pros get together one last time before clashing for the coveted Regent Aguila Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific plums.
A total of 19 elite tri warriors dispute the men’s crown in the most star-studded race in the $75,000 event put up by title sponsor Aguila Energy Drink and Regent Food Corp., to ever participate in an Ironman 70.3 event in the country.

“You always have your work cut out in races of this caliber because you have to beat the best athletes, but I feel okay,” said the legendary Alexander, also eyeing a strong finish in the event backed by venue hosts Province of Cebu, City of Lapu Lapu, Mandaue City and Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.

Hauschildt, meanwhile, looks to keep her women’s tiara versus 14 equally talented challengers, including Davao IM 70.3 queen Radka Kahlefeldt of the Czech Republic, four-time IM 70.3 Phl conqueror Caroline Steffen of Switzerland, Dimity Lee Duke and Beth McKenzie along with Anna Eberhardt, Lauren Goss, Bruna Mahn, Sabrina Stadelmann, Lisa Tyack, Lauren Brandon, Grace Thek, Simone Maier, Holly Khan and Manami Iijima.

“I’ve had a great season so far (and I want to sustain it),” said Hauschildt, the two-time half-distance IM world champ who is fresh from her triumph in the 70.3 European and North American championships.

The competitors start in the beach front of Shangri-La, doing a point to point swim over 1.9K, then tackle a new course for the 90K bike, traversing two cities and tackling the head and cross winds of Talisay City, before running a 21K two-loop course of generally flat terrain of mixed asphalt and concrete roads of Punta Engano with energetic townsfolk lined up to cheer them on.

Other backers of the event are bike course partners City of Cebu, Mandaue and Talisay, official logistics and courier partner 2GO Express, official hydration partners Gatorade, official energy gel Gu, official swim cap TYR, official footwear and apparel Asics and official registration partner Active Network and official hotels BE Resorts Mactan, Crimson, Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino Mactan and Mont and Michel and Metropolitan Cebu Water District.

One day to go, Ironman here we go

CEBU, Philippines — In less than 24 hours, close to 3, 000 triathletes will be competing in the Ironman 70.3 Philippines Asia-Pacific that will be held at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu -Lapu City.

For men, there are some things that you need to consider as Ironman participants. First things first, never try anything new. There are tons

of new gears displayed at the expo, but never try anything new.

Here are also some tips in dealing with each three disciplines during the race:

SWIM: Don’t eat too much before the swim event.  I remembered years ago coming to the race morning on an empty stomach and went for a quick shawarma rice snack. It was big mistake as I felt heavy on my belly and I was constantly burping.

Avoid using new pair of goggles during the swim. I usually bring spare goggles in my transition bag. Try to put some anti-jellyfish lotion and if in case you get stung, don’t scratch them as it will spread faster.

BIKE: Although there are a number of awesome equipment on sale at the Ironman Expo, never used untested helmetd, pedals, shades or even bike  frames. It takes usually two to three rides to adjust to your new equipment.

Avoid adjusting the saddle height or even the angle of your handle bars or stem. Please bring your spare tubes, at least two, for the bike ride  and one spare in your transition bag. Also, don’t forget two Co2 cartridges, a bike pump, multi-bike tool, pair of bike lever, chain link and nail cutter. Yes nail cutter as this can be useful when you get punctured by a staple wire. Most importantly bring ample hydration and nutrition.

Check your tire pressure before the race, wipe clean and re-lube your chain. Put your chain on the correct gears, you don’t want to exit the bike transition on hard gears.  I have heard a lot bikers complaining about the new bike route but upon testing during the Sun Life bike out, it is not as hard as it sounds.  If you lack training, then you will have a tough time on the bike. Just be extra careful of the crosswind when you go down  the bridge as there are a lot of pot holes along the bike route.  Try to relax your upper body to avoid unnecessary waste of energy. Try not to push too hard and at the start, maintain a good pace around 26-30kph and a cadence between 75 to 90. Hydrate at least every 30 minutes (small sips will do) and eat or munch every 45 to 50 minutes.

RUN:  There are number of very tempting new model of running shoes at the EXPO.  You can shop all you want but I advise to use them only  after the race. Unless your existing running shoes is already worn out, then you have no other choice. Don’t forget to put gliding cream on your  armpits, legs, feet and even on your nipple. We don’t want to get bloody nipple in the finish line. Try to hydrate at every water station.   Avoid  getting your feet wet especially on the first 10 kilometers. Bring a small cooler box. It can double as a stool so you can sit comfortably while changing your shoes.

Also, charge all your gadgets like phone, camera and finally, get a good night sleep tonight and reminder for those coming from the Cebu and  Mandaue, road closes at  4 a.m.

Celebs at Ironman share their fitness motivations

CEBU, Philippines — Its Ironman weekend in Cebu once again, with triathletes and supporters from all over the world gathered here to try and conquer the rigorous swim, bike, and run course.

For the fifth time, financial services organization, Sun Life Financial Inc., brings their executives, employees and endorsers to join in on the fun, with actor Piolo Pascual at the helm of the Sun Life Tri Team.

Alongside Piolo are GoWell brand ambassadors Enchong Dee and Bubbles Paraiso, as well as Sun Life executives, employees, and professional athletes who talked about their fitness journey in a press conference yesterday at Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa.

Piolo, flag-bearer for the whole Sun Life delegation who will compete on the bike for one of four Sun Life teams, expressed his delight at being back in Cebu.

“It gives me so much excitement to represent a brand that promotes health and wellness apart from financial stability. I just want to encourage all the athletes. I train even when I’m so busy with work. You have to walk the talk,” began Piolo, who had his celebrity son, Iñigo Pascual, along with him for support.

Piolo says he’s looking forward to be amongst Cebuanos once more.

“Thank you to the people of Cebu. When we go out to race, even the students, they were in their uniforms, they cheer for us. I’m looking forward to that: going around the cities of Cebu, hopefully to meet and shake hands with them. Sana hindi lang maaksidente because once in a while they try to mob you.”

The actor also welcomed fellow Kapamilya star Enchong Dee into the Sun Life fold as the latter is now part of the GoWell wellness community.

Enchong, a former member of the Philippine national swimming team, will be competing in the swimming category this year. He shared how one should be comfortable and passionate about the sport they choose to get into.

“Six years old ako nag-start [swimming]. It was just a recreational thing. I fell in love with the sport the year after,” the 29-year-old says.

“When people ask me the secret to finding a sport that you can stick to, I say look for the one where you will really fall in love with so that hindi mo siya gagawin dahil uso, dahil dito may endorsement. I want to do it because I feel better with that sport, I get healthier with that sport, and I inspire people with that sport,” Enchong advises.

Swimming is mainly his way of keeping fit. “The sport really helps a lot. Kasi isa sa motivation ko is to really move more than what I eat. And I eat a lot, trust me. So I really find time. If you want something that bad, you would really do something for it. And I really want to look good for you guys.”

The celebrity swimmer reminds everyone who might be thinking about starting their fitness journey, that the whole thing is a process, that it takes time and a lot of work. For the Ironman competition, he made sure that every other commitment was planned around his training.

“Madalas ang nakikita ng tao is the end result. Hindi nila nakikita yung process. Ang ginawa ko for this specific competition, I made my swimming practices my priority and everything adjusted around that. I went to Ultra, Greenhills just to train. Then I adjusted my schedule for work and rehearsals,” he says.

Enchong would like to finish the complete Ironman course someday and work his way up to other international marathons.

Actress and model Bubbles Paraiso, who will be competing for the relay event, says that it takes a lot of sacrifice to juggle being an athlete and a career woman.

“Like Enchong, I started as a young athlete. I started competing for tennis at the age of seven. I grew up having sports in my life but over the past years, I’ve been doing triathlon,” says Bubbles, who also teaches yoga.

“It’s really time management. I bring my bike trainer with me to work, get some extra two hours. Lunch time I’m there running. We have to make sacrifices. Say goodbye to your social life – and that’s really hard for me. Know what your priorities are. As long as you manage every aspect of your life, then it’s pretty doable to be an athlete and still have your job.”

Piolo – who headlines Sun Life’s “SunPIOLOgy” obstacle, run, and cycling course that doubles as a fund-raising program for various causes—says that exercise shouldn’t be treated as a chore.

“I tried taking care of myself when I joined showbiz. You have to inspire and motivate yourself because of what you do. For me, it’s more of a lifestyle. Not just a thing you do to be fit, it should be part of your

daily routine. You want to take care of yourself, you want to live longer, and enjoy life better,” says Piolo, currently seen on the ABS-CBN primetime series “Since I Found You.”

Asked how they manage to balance the long hours at work with training for sports events, Piolo, Enchong, and Bubbles agree that exercise for them is a stress reliever rather than a stressor. For them, exercise hardly comes in the way of work. Instead of exhausting them, it allows them to make more use of their potential and make the most of life.

“It’s an outlet, actually,” says Piolo, who is eyeing to join the Berlin marathon when he turns 42 next year (he registered last year but management had to cut his schedule short).

“It’s proper time management. You want to enjoy life better, you want to sweat it out. It’s not really a big deal to wake up earlier for a workout. If you make it part of your lifestyle, it’s easy even if you have work. It makes life more balanced.”
