Speech: El Shaddai DWXI-PPFI 33rd Anniversary (Aug. 19-20, 2017)

The county's hosting of the next world youth day (WYD) is seen as an opportunity to showcase to the world the progress happening nationwide under the my administration's "Golden Age of Infrastructure". The Philippines is the third largest Catholic country in the world and also bound to gain more in terms of tourism and, at the same time, prove to the world that the Philippines is a safe place to visit and secure country to hold international events. The Philippine edition of the biennial event for young people organized by the Catholic Church is expected to be held in Metro Manila and Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte.

It would be held on January 13 to 19, 2020 presided by Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. According to the UNHCR Population Statistics Database, more than 65 million people worldwide (roughly 1% of the world’s population) are displaced from their homes due to war, persecution, extreme violence, man-made disasters and similar factors. Of these displaced persons, about 20 million are classified as refugees, roughly the same number of people who were displaced worldwide as a result of World War II. Twenty-two years ago, Saint John Paul II celebrated Mass marking the end of the 1995 World Youth Day at the same venue, the crowd was surpassed the two million people who turned out in June 1979 at the Pope’s hometown of Krakow for the first visit to his Polish homeland after his elevation to the papacy.
