POC chief hears 120 anthem plays in SEAG

POC president Ricky Vargas said the other day his dream is to hear the National Anthem played 120 times during the coming SEA Games and based on projections from the various NSAs, it could come true.

“I think it’s achievable,” said Vargas. “I mentioned it to the athletes during the meeting with our chef de mission, PSC chairman Butch (Ramirez) last week. That means bringing in 120 gold medals. I don’t know if that will be enough to put us at the top of the standings. That should guarantee us a first, second or third place finish. It will depend on how the other countries do since we’re putting up a record 56 sports with 529 events.”

The most sports in a previous SEA Games came to 44 with 545 events in Jakarta in 2011. Host Indonesia topped the medal ladder with 182 gold medals from a total haul of 476. Thailand was second with 109 gold and Vietnam third with 96. The Philippines finished sixth with 37.

Vargas declined to identify the events where the Philippines is expected to strike gold. Other countries are also quiet on their projections. Events may still be scratched if there are less than four countries participating so forecasts are being kept secret to avoid withdrawals.

When the Philippines hosted the 11-nation conclave in 2005, there were 40 sports and 443 events. The Philippines took overall honors with 112 gold medals. Thailand was second with 87 and Vietnam third with 71. The titular chef de mission was former first gentleman Mike Arroyo and deputy was PSC chairman Butch Ramirez. This year, Ramirez will reprise his role only this time as chef de mission.

Ramirez said the goal for the Philippines is to top the medal standings, nothing less. “We’re going for No. 1,” he said. “We’ve got a budget of P6 Billion for the SEA Games and even as a major chunk is for equipment, facilities and infrastructure, it will be an insult to our people, especially those who are impoverished, if we aspire for No. 2 or less. Each of our four PSC commissioners has been assigned 15 NSAs to monitor the progress of preparations of our athletes and coaches. As CDM of Team Pilipinas, my attitude is positive. I will maintain my competitive spirit. Ever since I was a boy scout in Grade 4, I’ve always strived to be the best. I want to win for our country. If we put up a united front, it will be beautiful for sports. We’ve got six more months to go before the start of the SEA Games.”

Vargas said there is never enough funding for every NSA. In boxing, Thailand has a budget of the equivalent of at least P100 Million a year. The budget for ABAP, in comparison, is only P20 Million a year. But Vargas said the Filipino athletes will fight despite the constraints. “The athletes will battle for flag and country, win or lose,” he said. “They’re proud to represent our country. I believe that in the long-term, we should develop our athletes of today to be our sports leaders of tomorrow. The process of selecting our sports leaders is too political now. It’s exclusive, not inclusive. We need the right people in the NSAs, people who can run the NSAs with competence, passion, integrity and professionalism so that the private sector will feel confident that if it supports a sport, the money will be in good hands.”

Vargas said the POC has started a long-term program to train athletes to become leaders. “The fundamental thing is they love their sport,” he said. “With that foundation, we want to train them in finance, to develop their leadership skills by arranging workshops.” Last March, the POC sponsored seven athletes to participate in the STEP SEA Youth Sports Leaders Camp in Singapore. Two of the seven athletes, Homer de Vera of bridge and Jamaila Ramos of pencak silat were later designated to act as facilitators in the Singapore Olympic Foundation’s Youth Sports Leaders Camp for 14 and 15-year-olds in Singapore over a month ago.

“It’ll be the next generation to benefit from our athletes leadership program,” said Vargas. “But we’re headed in the right direction. This is for the future of Philippine sports.”

UF plans athletic dorm as part of $2.2 billion campus overhaul

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Florida should get a serious makeover in the next decade.

On Saturday, the Gainesville Sun reported that UF's capital improvement plans for the campus call for upgrades and renovations projected to cost $2.2 billion over the next five to 10 years.

Among those upgrades will be the construction of a new athletic and general student dorm. That building should significantly enhance the experience of student-athletes, who are mostly housed in the Keys and Springs dorms on campus, two buildings which are fairly dated when compared to several Power 5 and SEC peers.

The new athletic dorms would be built across the street from Hume Hall on Museum Road, about a block south of where a planned $65 million stand-alone football facility will be constructed.

The athletic dorm will have 500 beds and will be constructed along with a new honors college meant to attract more of the nation's top students. Those two projects are estimated to cost $60 million, with a goal of completion by fall 2023.

Florida's stand-alone football facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. The football facility calls for a 130,000-square-foot facility that will be connected to the current indoor practice facility. That will allow players the flexibility to use the turf indoor field for athletic training in close proximity to the weight room, a luxury the Gators don't currently have with the weight room housed underneath Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The stand-alone facility will also allow Florida to maximize efficiency with the location of the locker rooms, training rooms, coaches offices, team meeting rooms and more all laid out in a more sensible manner.

South of the stand-alone facility the current plan is to include green space, with the potential for future development in that area, which adjoins Stadium Road.

The Gators are also currently upgrading the locker room inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, which will serve as a gameday-only locker room once the new football facility is built. Further renovations to the locker room are expected once the stand-alone facility is completed, allowing for some of the football offices and team meeting rooms to be relocated, freeing up more space underneath the south end zone at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

All in all, Florida's facilities -- and campus overall, if you read the Sun's documentation of the planned $2.2 billion in campus upgrades -- should be top of the line in the relatively near future.

"I've mentioned this to coach (Dan) Mullen, in 18 months, when they're at their practice field and they have recruits watching practice, they're going to turn around over their shoulder and they're going to have cranes in the air and they're going to have steel going up and there's going to be signs of progress," athletics director Scott Stricklin said in December.

"Even though the facility's not going to be done, it's going to send a pretty powerful message, because the kids that we'll be recruiting at that point, they're going to be in that building. And they'll actually be able to see it coming out of the ground.

"I think it's one of the components that sends a message about what's important to that university, just like the caliber of your coaches, your fan support, the brand or prestige of playing for a certain university based on their history of success. Facilities is a big part of that.

"Three years from now we're going to sit back and we're going to be really glad that we took the time to do it the right way and do it the way we did and do it in a way that can impact our program positively for generations to come."

TV Station Message

On December 10, 1988, ABS-CBN launched nationwide domestic satellite programming, while on May 11 to 12, 1992, coinciding the 1992 Presidential Elections, ABS-CBN began its 24-hour broadcasting service, starting with the marathon coverage of Halalan '92. However, they continue to sign-off the air every Tuesday mornings from 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM for its regular transmitter maintenance, as well as during the early hours of the Paschal Triduum for its annual Holy Week maintenance.

Other TV networks began 24-hour broadcasting services, such as ABC-5 and GMA-7.

To recall, GMA expanded to 27 stations nationwide with the launch of Rainbow Satellite on April 30, 1992, while the station message voiced by Danny Soncuya.

Newly-reopened ABC has granted permit to operate by the NTC, then it flashes the Anthem Music Video before the Morning Offering: The Morning Prayer starts with “Dear God, thank you for having us a wonderful (day of the week)”

IBC-13 granted permit to operate by the NTC in November 1992, a month it reverted back to the current name.

1000 Hz tone/classical music may be broadcast fifteen to twenty minutes before the actual sign-on, Kaya pala nag-antay pa ako ng ilang minuto sa ABS-CBN, GMA, GMA News TV, PTV, S&A hanggang sa lumabas ang bidyo ng Pambansang Awit.

A signal to turn on remote transmitters may be played—this is usually a series of touch tones.

It flashes the program announcement:
