Alyssa Valdez and Robi Domingo headline 'UAAP Greats' special to kick-off UAAP season 80 on S+A

Volleyball phenom Alyssa Valdez, Kapamilya host Robi Domingo, and former UAAP courtside report Ganiel Krishnan will join forces to show some of the greatest athletes and moments in the country’s premier collegiate league to jumpstart UAAP’s milestone 80th season.

The trio will feature the likes of Ian Lariba, Danny Florencio, Lydia De Vega, and Robert Jaworski in the “UAAP Greats” TV special, which will air this Saturday (September 9) at 1pm on S+A and S+A HD, right after the grand opening ceremony of UAAP Season 80 at 12pm, courtesy of this year’s host the Far Eastern University.

Alyssa, Robi, and Ganiel will take us through a time travel of sorts to the greatest winning streaks, individual performances, championship runs, and tandems that have dotted the 80 years of UAAP, while the ceremony promises to bring back the legends from each school to welcome the new season, which has the theme “Go for Great.”

Moreover, S+A will also introduce new features in its UAAP coverage, starting with a new batch of courtside reporters, which include Miguel Dypiangco (NU), Tonie Moreno (UST), Eileen Shi (DLSU), Martie Bautista (ADMU), Nicole Sumangui (AdU), Agatha Uvero (UP), Migs Gomez (UE), and Sydney Crespo (FEU). Former courtside reporters Krishnan, Pauline Versoza, Angelique Manto, and Ira Pablo will also return to serve as “UAAP Insiders” that will offer viewers and netizens with exclusive bits and features on UAAP teams and its players.

This year also marks the reinvention of the magazine show “Upfront at the UAAP,” with original host Janeena Chan being joined by new hosts Martin Javier, Turs Daza, and Manto in presenting in-depth and fun features on the lives of the athletes on and off the playing courts. ABS-CBN Sports will also launch a UAAP microsite, www.uaap80.com, which will house all updates, stories, and videos for the season. A special edition UAAP Magazine will also be coming out within the season.

Meanwhile, kicking off the explosive opening day lineup will be the National University Bulldogs going up against the University of the East Red Warriors at 2pm, followed by an aerial showdown between the Adamson Falcons and the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles. Sunday (September 10) gameday features a doubleheader with the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers making their debut against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons starting things off at 2pm. The defending champions De La Salle Green Archers and the hosts Far Eastern U Tamaraws then face off in an early-season preview of the Final Four at 4pm.

Actors Guild signs MOA with SSS

The Actors Guild of the Philippines led by its president, Imelda Papin, has partnered with the Social Security System (SSS), through the leadership of its President Emmanuel Dooc and Chairman Dean Amado Valdez, via a Memorandum of Agreement signed recently.

Dubbed the “ArtistaSSSya” partnership, the undertaking seeks the enrollment of more actors from the movie and television industry to further ensure their welfare and interests. As qualified members of the SSS, dutifully observing premium contributions, their coverage for social security benefits becomes certain and stable, hazards of work, environment and lifestyle notwithstanding.

Corollary to this, SSS was generous enough to grant the Actors Guild with an office space at its main building in East Ave., Quezon City.

In related news, the Actors Guild is gearing up for a Medical Mission for its Senior Citizen members sometime this September as an off-shoot of its fundraising event held at the SM North Skydome last June 3.

Other projects slated are the Shootfest and Star Bazaar in December, the proceeds of which will be for the Guild’s social service programs and the creation of a livelihood cooperative to augment the income of the actors.

Last July 17, the Board Members of the Guild were formally inducted by no less than President Rodrigo Roa Duterte at MalacaƱang Palace. The Actors Guild is proud to be tapped as part of the government’s program for peace and stability.

David Consunji of DMCI Holdings passes away at 95

Construction magnate David Consunji, chairman emeritus of DMCI Holdings, has passed away at the age of 95, his son Isidro confirmed on Monday.

Consunji, a pioneering industrialist and an engineer, built DMCI from humble beginnings into one of the biggest corporations in the country, with interests in construction, real estate, mining and energy.

He took up civil engineering at the University of the Philippines.

During an apprenticeship with his cousin in the construction industry, David found his calling--construction.

After gathering experience, he put up his own contracting company in 1950.

Four years later his company became incorporated and became known as DM Consunji Inc.

The company started building chicken houses for the Bureau of Animal Industry before moving on to bigger things.

Its first major project was the parish of the Holy Sacrifice also known as the UP Diliman Chapel.

Aside from his work in the privater sector, Consunji also served as secretary of Public Works, Transportation and Communications in the 1970s during the time of then President Ferdinand Marcos.

After spending decades managing DMCI, Consunji retired in 2014 and gave the reins of the business to his son Isidro.

Consunji has consistently landed in the Forbes list of richest Filipinos, with his wealth estimated at $3.1 billion this year.

His wake will be held at the Sanctuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park starting September 5, Tuesday.
