#BENCHHERITAGE: A PRIMER ON 30 GREAT YEARS

It’s a story for the ages.

For most of us who grew up in the 90s and 2000s, we will remember growing up with Bench. It was a staple in every teenage Filipino’s wardrobe, providing everyday staples and becoming a mainstay at every mall and billboard. Before we knew it, Bench had become a mega brand, with not just clothes, but perfumes, hair products, salons, its own fashion week, and so many more. But how exactly did it get there? As BENCH/ celebrates 30 years, we take a quick look at the brand’s journey to the top. You know what they say, time does fly when you’re having fun.

1987 – 1997: Starting strong

BENCH/ began as a humble corner stall at SM Makati (then known as Shoemart Makati) in ’87, selling men’s shirts. Two years later, it opened its first boutique at Park Square, with huge images of the one and only BENCH/ OG, Richard Gomez. He was a rookie actor then, and it was unheard of for a brand to use a celebrity endorser. Two more years later, in 1991, BENCH/ and Gomez trailblazed with the now-iconic ad “A Day in a Sculler’s Life”, the first of a groundbreaking series of advertisements that would go on to win various international awards.

By the end of its first decade, BENCH/ had solidified itself in the local market, with the launch of its women’s line Herbench/ in 1993, which would also be fronted by the country’s leading female personalities. In 1997, even before the famous Guadalupe billboards, BENCH/ conquered the metro with its head-turning billboards. Its first underwear billboard was the biggest in town at the time, and it featured no less than hunky matinee idol Jomari Yllana in nothing more than a skimpy pair of briefs. It would serve as a precursor to the brands highly provocative ads later on, straddling the fine line between tasteful and sexy.

1997 – 2007: Expanding the universe

As it entered its second decade in the business, BENCH/ showed no signs of slowing down. If anything, it was still raring to go and create products with as much gusto as when it first started. The early 2000s saw the expansion of the BENCH universe across the board, from its products, endorsers, events, and retail locations.

From 1998-1999, BENCH/ launched its FIX line of products, which would later give birth to its own chain of salons, Bench FIX, in 2001. At this same time, the brand also ventured into snacks called Bench Bytes, which included potato chips, popcorn, marshmallows, and candies. BENCH/ became the true embodiment of a lifestyle brand.

The new millennium welcomed what would become BENCH/’s biggest pop culture event: its famed underwear show. Today, the underwear show is one of the most awaited events on the local calendar, taking place in the biggest arenas in the country.

The 2000s also saw the brand’s expansion into the international retail landscape. In 2002, BENCH/ opened its first store in Shanghai, the first Filipino brand to do so. The following year, the brand tapped into the F4 fever and included Jerry Yan into its roster of endorsers, which included a highly-anticipated visit to Manila and Cebu.

2007 – 2017: Elevating local to global

One might think that once a brand gets to the top, all it has to do is stay there. But not BENCH/. The brand has always believed in loving and elevating local, praising our local talent and helping them get further. Throughout its existence, BENCH/ has always proud to be a FIlipino brand, carrying that in its DNA and championing #LoveLocal in both our own shores and in the far reaches of the world. In 2007, BENCH/ designed uniforms for Cebu Pacific, and in 2011, the brand recruited the national rugby team, the Philippine Volcanoes, to be the faces of BENCH/ Body. It was also around this time when the brand asserted its international presence, appearing in America’s Next Top Model, and getting Bruno Mars, Joe Jonas, Adam Levine, Liam Hemsworth, Lee Min Ho, and more for its campaigns.

In 2013, BENCH/ let its roots grow and settled into its new home in BGC, in the 24-storey Bench Tower just in time for the brand’s 25th anniversary. In the following year, the brand launched both Benchmark/ and B/Blog, its in-house magazine and online digest, respectively. In 2015, BENCH/ was all about love: the book Love Local and the “Love All Kinds of Love” campaign were launched.

Last year, in 2016, BENCH/ began its ascent into the international arena once more, showing at the Amazon Fashion Week in Tokyo, and BENCH/ Body at New York Men’s Fashion Week for the Spring 2017 shows.

And now, as it celebrates its 30th year in the industry, BENCH/ launched BENCH/ Fashion Week and the BENCH/ Design Awards, putting the spotlight not just on its various brands, but on young design talent as well. The BENCH/ Design Awards gives the chance for local designers to show at Amazon Fashion Week alongside BENCH/ and offers mentorship and support for the designers to step onto the world stage.

To put a cherry on top of all this success, BENCH/ has reissued some of its classic logo t-shirts in stores, celebrating its evolution and heritage. They also serve as a reminder that after all this time, BENCH/ has no plans of slowing down. It’s true, what they say: it’s only when one looks back when they realize all they’ve accomplished. Here’s to the next 30 years!

MVP firm to invest P20B in MRT3

MRTC gets original proponent status; Swiss challenge auction seen

Infrastructure giant Metro Pacific Investments Corp. said it would invest more in the troubled Metro Rail Transit Line 3 after recently bagging a coveted original proponent status.

Metro Pacific president Jose Lim told reporters Friday that it could invest around P20 billion on the MRT-3 when factoring in the “equity requirement.”

“The required investment amount is larger,” Lim told reporters at the sidelines of the unified railway station groundbreaking event in Quezon City on Friday.

Earlier, Metro Pacific said it would spend P12.5 billion to rehabilitate MRT-3, which runs along Edsa and serves about half a million passengers a day.

An original proponent status gives a firm a big advantage should the project be auctioned off under a Swiss challenge, a type of bidding process that allows rivals to submit competing offers.

In case another group submits a better offer, the original proponent has the right to match those terms and win the project.

The next step is securing the approval from the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).

“We are waiting for Neda to inform us when they want to have the first meeting to review the terms,” Lim said.

The offer comes amid an ongoing row between the Department of Transportation and Busan Universal Rail Inc., MRT-3’s maintenance provider since January 2016.
The railway system, which opened in 1999, suffers from frequent breakdowns, disrupting the commute of its riders.

The DOTr had already signaled it wanted to cancel Busanís three-year contract. Busan, for its part, accused the government of withholding fees over the past 11 months and scored the DOTr for its alleged inaction on a needed rail replacement project.

“We are coming up with a transition team for MRT,” MRT-3 general manager Rodolfo Garcia said on Friday. “We’re preparing just in case the [Busan] contract is canceled.”

Metro Pacific has had its eye on the MRT-3 since 2011 when it first made an offer to take over the railway line.

At that time, it also sealed a ìcooperation agreementî with various groups with interests in MRT-3. This would allow the company to exercise options to gain a stake in private sector owner Metro Rail Transit Corp.

Metro Pacific’s offer at that time was rejected. The Department of Transportation under President Aquino decided to pursue the buyout itself, although the endeavor was unsuccessful because it failed to secure funding from Congress.

Metro Pacific is also planning to buy out MRTC’s government shareholders.

The state-owned Development Bank of the Philippines and Land Bank of the Philippines hold about 77 percent of MRTCís economic rights, acquired through bondholders, and about a fifth of its voting shares.

Metro Pacific, whose portfolio spans water distribution, power, toll roads and hospitals, has exposure in the railway sector through Light Rail Manila Corp., a consortium with Ayala Corp. that operates and is expanding the Light Rail Transit Line 1 to Cavite province.

MPIC hikes offer to P20 B to take over MRT-3

Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) has increased its proposed amount of investment to rehabilitate as well as take over the operations and maintenance of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), from an initial P12 billion to P20 billion.

“The details of the proposal have changed. The required amount of investment is larger,” MPIC president and chief executive officer Jose Ma. Lim told reporters.

He said the required amount of investment for the MRT-3’s rehabilitation, maintenance and operations is now P20 billion, which includes the firm’s equity requirement.

When the group submitted the proposal to the government last July 14, it involved an investment of P12 billion.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said last month the Department of Transportation has granted the group of MPIC and Ayala Corp. the original proponent status for the MRT-3’s rehab as well as operations and maintenance.

The proposal would involve the rehabilitation of the train system without any fare increase for at least two years, as well as the handling of operations for  30 to 32 years.

Following the grant of original proponent status, Lim said the group is now waiting for the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) to review the terms of the proposal.

“NEDA will review the terms of our proposal. They’ll discuss it. If acceptable, then it will be subject to a Swiss challenge,” he said.

Should the group be awarded the concession for the MRT-3 which covers North Ave. station in Quezon City until Taft station in Pasay City, the rehabilitation, operations and maintenance would be pursued through a separate special purpose vehicle, similar to the ownership structure of Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC).

LRMC, which operates the Light Rail Transit Line 1 currently running from Roosevelt station in Quezon City until Baclaran station in Pasay City, is composed of MPIC’s Metro Pacific Light Rail Corp., Ayala Corp.’s AC Infrastructure Holdings Corp., and Macquarie Infrastructure Holdings (Philippines) PTE Ltd.

Earlier, MPIC chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said it is important to address issues of the MRT-3 for the benefit of consumers.

The train system along Edsa which has been going through a series of breakdowns and service interruptions, currently carries more than 500,000 passengers per day.

Hitachi unit interested in subway, Malolos railway

THE railway systems unit of Hitachi Ltd., is interested in constructing the Metro Manila subway and Tutuban-Malolos railway projects.

“We are very much interested in the… Tutuban-Malolos railway, and the Metro Manila Subway,” Shinya Mitsudomi, Asia-Pacific managing director for Hitachi Ltd.’s Railway Systems unit told reporters in a media round table.

Mr. Mitsudomi said that the company sees “a lot of opportunities” in the Philippines, particularly with the Japanese government supporting infrastructure projects in the country.

“We [want to apply] our technology solutions to contribute to improving quality of life [in the Philippines], Mr. Mitsudomi said.

Both the Metro Manila Subway and the Tutuban-Malolos railway are projects funded through overseas development assistance (ODA) from Japan. Under the funding scheme, Japanese companies, or joint ventures involving Japanese companies, will be tapped for the projects.

“This could be a very big opportunity for us,” Mr. Mitsudomi added.

Mr. Mitsudomi said the company is in talks with “several local partners” to bid for the railway projects. “In every infrastructure business, we need to have the right local partner.”

Mr. Mitsudomi also said the company is interested in participating in the New Clark City development project.
