Wolves granting Butler trade request after contrasting desires by management

AFTER keeping one of their stars, The Minnesota Timberwolves are eager to part ways with their other.

Following their move to sign Karl-Anthony Towns to a five-year, $190-million extension, the Wolves are determined to trade Jimmy Butler.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported the development on Sunday, Manila time.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN solidified the report, saying Wolves owner Glen Taylor has instructed president and head coach Tom Thibodeau and general manager Scott Layden to put Butler on the trading block, ordering them to act swiftly on the matter.
Butler has been basically requesting for a trade after saying he has no intention to re-sign with the Wolves next summer. And it seems the Western conference club has given in to his wishes.
Layden, Wojnarowski said, has tried to deny inquiries from other teams about the availability of Butler, but the big boss has other plans.

CARDIFF, Wales — Sergio Aguero celebrated signing a new contract with Manchester City by scoring the opening goal in a 5-0 win over Cardiff in the English Premier League on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time).

The Argentina striker's fourth league goal of the season came on his 300th appearance for City, which bounced back from its surprise midweek loss to Lyon in the Champions League.

Bernardo Silva, Ikay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez — with two second-half goals as a substitute — also scored at Cardiff City Stadium as City recorded a fifth win in the opening six games of its title defense.

City announced on Friday that Aguero penned a one-year extension to his contract, tying him to the club until 2021 and likely meaning he'll see out a decade at Etihad Stadium.

The fans' favorite was back in the starting lineup after getting dropped to the bench against Lyon and was dangerous throughout, getting his goal in the 32nd by finishing off a squared ball by Bernardo.

The Portugal playmaker turned scorer three minutes later when he flicked in a cross from Leroy Sane.

Gundogan curled in a classy third just before halftime after exchanging passes with Raheem Sterling, before Mahrez scored in the 67th — with his first since joining in the offseason from Leicester — soon after replacing Aguero and again in the 89th.

ABS-CBN sets record straight on Nestle report

ABS-CBN News had no intention to cause misinformation when it published two stories about food and beverage giant Nestle's possible pullout from the Philippines last week.

ABS-CBN News' story, published on Sept. 6, on Nestle's plans in the Philippines, was based on a report from Nikkei Asian Review, a credible Japanese business news agency.

Following a clarification from Nestle on Sept. 7, and subsequent online criticism from administration supporters, ABS-CBN News re-validated the basis for Nikkei story, which was also carried as far back as Sept. 3 by the Manila Bulletin and the Manila Standard. The Philippine Star published its version on Sept. 5.

 There was no misrepresentation of comments made by Ernesto Mascenon, Senior Vice-President and Head of Corporate Affairs at Nestle's Philippine unit.

In an interview with reporters, Mascenon was asked about the second tranche of tax reforms aimed at companies, to which he replied:

"That's what we're requesting them, that TRAIN 2 address the disadvantage of the local manufacturers who use local agricultural products against those who are importing finished products especially from ASEAN."

Pressed how local manufacturers should benefit from tax reform, he said: "How can we become competitive? Is there a way? Kasi otherwise, the option for us is to, we will close down our manufacturing here and just move to Indonesia or Vietnam or Malaysia and import."

Nestle issued its clarification on Sept. 7, one day after the ABS-CBN report. ABS-CBN News published the clarification promptly on Sept. 7, which said "Nestle Philippines is not planning to close any of its manufacturing facilities in the Philippines.”

To avoid confusion, ABS-CBN News also updated the Sept. 6 story, to tell readers that Nestle has clarified the statement of its own official.

Ildefonso brothers, NU spoil Ayo's UST coaching debut

The NU Bulldogs hold off a late UST run to dispatch the Tigers and new coach Aldin Ayo

Ildefonso brothers Dave and Shaun starred as the National U Bulldogs tripped the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, 75-70, at the start of their campaign in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, September 8 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Dave Ildefonso had a marvelous debut with a team-high 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. His brother Shaun tallied a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.

Senegalese big man Issa Gaye was a defensive monster with 6 points, 7 blocks and 4 boards to also lift the Bulldogs, who held off a late UST run and spoiled the coaching debut of former champion La Salle mentor Aldin Ayo.

After a back and forth first half, the upstart Bulldogs broke away in the third quarter as they outscored the lost Tigers, 21-9, for a 54-37 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

Boosted by Gilas cadet Troy Rike, the Ildefonso brothers showed their versatility on offense with hard drives and pinpoint shooting as Jamike Jarin’s squad created a double-digit separation.

However, UAAP juniors MVP CJ Cansino changed that in the final frame with 6 straight points for UST, ending with a rare 4-point play to slash the NU lead to 8, 60-52.

Cameroonian big man Steve Akomo brought it down to 7, 60-67, with a mid-range jumper at the 4:10 mark.

In the end, UST’s run was all for nothing as NU's John Lloyd Clemente was left open on the break for the dagger layup, 74-68, with 25 seconds left.

Despite, the win, Jarin found a lot to improve on.“[Us] coaches, we’re not satisfied,” he said post-game.

“We played really good in the 3rd quarter and all of a sudden, we didn’t play selflessly in the 4th quarter," added Jarin. "That only shows that we really have a young team. We need to mature fast in order to compete this season.”

But Jarin gave credit to his young guns. “I look good because of the way they play,” he said.

Super rookies Cansino and Dave Ildefonso made noise in the first half amid struggling team vets as they led both their squads with 10 points apiece.

Cansino wound up leading the Tigers with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Renzo Subido added 15 points, albeit on a horrid 5-of-24 (21%) clip.

Green Archers dedicating UAAP campaign to heroine Ian Lariba

DE La Salle is dedicating its whole UAAP Season 81 campaign to its late table tennis icon Yan Lariba.

As the La Salle community mourns the loss of Lariba, who passed away at the young age of 23 late Sunday night after battling leukemia, athletic director Emmanuel Calanog said the school will be dedicating Season 81 to the 2016 Rio de Janiero Olympian through the #4LaSalleYan battle cry on social media.

“Actually from last year ‘yung hashtag namin normally, we have a theme for the UAAP Season from #LabanLaSalleYan we started out kasi ‘4 La Salle’ which is really on playing for La Salle and hopefully going for our fourth general championship so it’s a number 4 La Salle now we added 4LaSalleYan,” Calanog explained.

“Aside from those two, It’s really dedicating this season to Yanyan and the way she approached her UAAP career, how she played, how she was a student-athlete and hopefully, it will inspire our athletes to play and be motivated as we enter this UAAP season,” he added.

Larriba’s wake is at St. Peter Memorial Chapel in Commonwealth and the public viewing begins on Tuesday at 12 noon until Wednesday before her remains will be transferred to Cagayan de Oro.

Calanog said that they have yet to decide on a long-term tribute for Lariba, but said the La Salle community will pay homage to its fallen heroine during a pep rally on Tuesday.

“Well ‘yung mga ganun kasi that’s something that we really have to sit down and discuss,” he said. “But definitely tomorrow, I guess there will be some sharing kasi tomorrow’s our pep rally, part of it will really probably in honor of Yanyan aside from trying to motivate the athletes as we enter Season 81.”

Before the press conference for Season 81 started on Thursday, UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag paid tribute to the three-time MVP and two-time Athlete of the Year, who went undefeated in her five years in the collegiate ranks while also excelling in academics as a consistent dean’s lister.

“As a person, she was very humble and unassuming and  had a very vibrant and happy disposition that rubbed off on those who were fortunate enough to be around her,” Saguisag said. “Yanyan will be missed. While we mourn her passing, let us also take occasion to celebrate her life, a life that most of us can only dream of. But most importantly in her last days, I guess Yanyan  reminded us that sport is a platform, a tool that can be used to do good as she spoke about her bout with Cancer.”

“As the Good Book says, Yanyan fought the good fight (2Timothy 4:7-8). She has passed on the torch to us  and we must carry on,” he added.

De La Salle basketball team captain Kib Montalbo said that the Green Archers were saddened by the loss of their schoolmate.

“We actually prayed for her bago mag-start ‘yung training siyempre parang she’s a big part of us, kasi she’s a legend and a hardworker,” he said. “Sinasabi nga namin ni coach (Louie Gonzales) na ‘yun pa ba ‘yung mga tao na walang ginagawang mali like she’s really a good person. You can’t really tell time, if your time’s up.”

Montalbo’s girlfriend and De La Salle Lady Spiker Desiree Cheng is a close friend of Lariba.

“Kilala ko siya personally I think batchmate ko siya or one year higher siya sa akin and close siya kay Des, girlfriend ko. Close sila, nakasama ko na rin siya minsan,” he said.

Filipino Olympian Yan Lariba passes away

Ian “Yanyan” Lariba, who represented the Philippines in the table tennis competition of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, died late Sunday after a long battle with leukemia. She was 23.

The Philippine Sports Commission broke the news of Lariba’s passing in its official Twitter account.

Lariba was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2016, a few months after her Olympic stint. A standout of the De La Salle University table tennis squad, she led the Green Archers to the UAAP title in Season 77.

Over the course of her UAAP career, Lariba has been named MVP thrice (Seasons 75, 77 and 78) and was the recipient of the Athlete of the Year award in Seasons 77 and 78.

News of Lariba’s health condition prompted an outpour of moral and financial support both from the local and international sports communities.

Now her death has sent shockwaves among Filipino fans, many of whom took to social media to offer their condolences.

Olympian table tennis hero Lariba passes away

After more than a year of battle against acute myeloid leukemia, Rio De Janeiro Olympian Ian Lariba finally found peace Sunday night.

She was 23.

The table tennis star, who made history by being the first Filipina athlete in the sport to qualify for the Olympics in 2016, was first diagnosed with AML in May 2017 after a series of blood tests.

Lariba, known by friends and family as Yanyan, went undefeated her entire five-year career in the UAAP playing for De La Salle University.

She was named Most Valuable Player in Seasons 75, 77 and 78 and was feted as UAAP Athlete of the Year in Seasons 77 and 78.

The soft-spoken and strong-willed athlete underwent a bone marrow transplant and was discharged from the hospital October last year.

She was a picture of hope as she started her road to recovery and a possible return to the sport she has always loved.

But January this year she experienced terrible headaches and underwent a head surgery.

Her condition worsened the following months.
