Nuggets complete historic comeback vs. Clippers

The Denver Nuggets achieved what no other team has ever done in the National Basketball Association playoffs after downing the Los Angeles Clippers, 104-89, in the decider of their Western Conference Semifinals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, USA on Wednesday (Philippine Time).

The Nuggets shut down the Clippers in the second half, outscoring them, 50-33, to pull away for good.

Jamal Murray erupted for 40 points, 20 coming in the second quarter, along with four rebounds, five assists, and one steal for the Nuggets, who became the first team ever to come back from a 1-3 deficit twice in the same postseason.

The Nuggets also needed to climb back from 1-3 down to beat the Utah Jazz in the first round.

Nikola Jokic added a triple-double of 22 rebounds, 16 points, and 13 assists with three blocks and two steals for the Nuggets, who will face the Los Angeles Lakers in the West Finals beginning Saturday (Philippine Time).

Montrezl Harrell came up with 20 points and three rebounds for the Clippers, who failed to make the national semifinals for the second time despite leading 3-1 in the second round since 2015.

Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, acquired during the preseason to lead the Clippers, were held to a combined 24 points on a 10-of-38 shooting.

Meanwhile, the other conference finals, the East Finals between Miami and Boston, began with the former prevailing in overtime, 117-114.

Jimmy Butler, who was relatively quiet during the regulation, came alive late into the extension with the eventual game-winning and-one with 12 seconds that put the Heat on top, 116-114.

Jayson Tatum tried to equalize for the Celtics, but Bam Adebayo swatted his dunk attempt just as the ball was already close to the basket.

Adebayo, a steady free throw shooter, still kept the door open for Boston to force another overtime as he only made a split from the free throw line off a Robert Williams foul, but Tatum missed another potential game-tying basket this time from three-point range before time expired, letting Miami escape.

Goran Dragic led the Heat with 29 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and one block.

Jae Crowder added 22 points, five rebounds, one assist, two blocks, and one steal.

Butler added 20 markers, five boards, five dimes, and two swipes.

Tyler Herro came close to a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists.

Tatum came up with 30 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks for the Celtics.

Jaylen Brown added 26 points, three rebounds, and one assist.

Both Miami and Boston will meet again in Game 2 of their best-of-seven series on Friday.

SEC Sets Scheduling Guidelines for Upcoming Swimming and Diving Season

GAINESVILLE, Fla.— The Southeastern Conference and Commissioner Greg Sankey announced a new set of guidelines and formats for the 2020-21 men's and women's swimming and diving season on Monday afternoon.

The Gators' upcoming regular season campaign can commence on Oct. 1, 2020 and finish no later than Jan. 25, 2021. All competition must be against regionalized opponents and will be restricted to dual meets unless certain accommodations and strategies are created to limit participants to ensure proper distancing.

A full schedule for both the men's and women's teams will be released at a later date.

2020-21 SEC Swimming and Diving Plan:

  • Season runs October 1, 2020 to January 25, 2021
  • Regionalized competition permitted upon the adherence of opponents to SEC Medical Guidance Task Force Requirements for COVID-19 Management
  • No restrictions on number of events

COVID-19 Commitments to Student-Athletes:

  • The SEC announced in July that student-athletes in all sports who elect to not participate in intercollegiate athletics during the fall 2020 academic semester because of health and/or safety concerns related to COVID-19 will continue to have their scholarships honored by their university and will remain in good standing with their team.
  • The SEC's Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force continues to meet on policies and procedures for the safe return of student-athletes to competition, building on the NCAA's Resocialization of College Sports Guidelines.

Cool Dudes, Cool Sports | THE HQ | STELLAR

Your favorite Kapamilya heartthrobs are not only awesome actors, captivating turners having well-chiseled bodies we all adore. They are also impeccable star athletes who also have impressive skills in their chosen field of sports, as we see in this episode of Stellar’s the HQ.

First on the list is Marco Gumabao, who is actually a passionate enthusiast of muay thai, the national sport of Thailand. Marco had already been a sports buff even at a very young age because his father, Dennis Roldan, was a former professional basketball player. Marco first used to love and play basketball. He would practice and play with his dad everyday in their house. But as he grew up, he realized he wanted to try out another sport which was muay thai. He thought of trying muay thai because of his flexible body and long legs, which make him extend his reach and kick high and fast. Marco got to share and explain the basics of muay thai, such as how to jab, to do a straight punch, and to kick.

Another athletic young Kapamilya actor is Grae Fernandez, the son of the former matinee idol Mark Anthony Fernandez. The 18-year old actor who's actually a varsity player in his school, said that basketball for him is really an effective stress-reliever. He added that when he’s playing the game, he’s like in a vacuum and he forgets all other things and just focuses on the game. His competitive side also comes out naturally. Grae also gave helpful advice to fellow ballers. He suggested shooting short-range shots first so you can practice your stroke before shooting from the outside. Another tip was to be unpredictable by constantly changing your moves on the court. Watch how Grae showed his skills in doing side steps and crossovers in his drills.

Next on the list is Enchong Dee, a three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player in swimming. Not only did he prove that he is a great swimmer, but he also showed that he’s one of the best as he won seven gold medals in a single UAAP season. Moreover, he brought home several recognitions from international swimming competitions. During Enchong’s interview, he said that the most difficult stroke in swimming but also his most favorite is the butterfly stroke. His tip in perfecting the butterfly stroke is always close your hands and keep your fingers together. He urged those interested in swimming to simply enjoy and love the sport no matter how difficult it is or how busy they can get. By loving the sport, you will get to train and work hard for it. Watch how Enchong taught UP volleyball player Roselyn Rosier different skills and techniques in doing the butterfly stroke.

Last on the list is Gerald Anderson who, aside from playing basketball, also plays parkour, a sport which requires you to traverse from one place to another and overcome obstacles using the body. He was introduced to the sport when he became part of the 2009 teleserye Tiagong Akyat where he did stunts he first thought were difficult. But during the first day of his training, Gerald believed that he could do it and realized it was actually fun. However, he also got scared and nervous at first because he knew it was a sport that’s prone to injuries. His tip was to just always take care but also be confident. There was even this one time in Tiagong Akyat where Gerald was supposed to have a stunt double in doing the scene where he had to jump from a tall building. But he told the director to roll the camera because he really wanted to do it himself since he made sure it was safe, and he nailed the stunt. Aside from having physical strength, doing parkour also helped the A Soldier’s Heart star become more disciplined especially in terms of training and getting fit.
