Enchong Dee gets down to business

Show business is a paradox: it can be lucrative one day but provide no source of income the next.

Enchong Dee knew this from the get-go, and luckily, was equipped to handle the situation, having been raised by parents who taught him how to handle money especially amid a financial crisis.

“Looking back, when I started earning money, my motivation was ‘How will the quality of my life improve?’” Enchong recounted. “Therefore all of the things I spent on are basically for my security, my comfort, and to improve the quality of my life. Doon ko siya lahat nilagay, so up to now, I feel that I am reaping the benefits of all the right things I did 10 years ago.”

As Enchong’s showbiz career gained traction, his finances eventually allowed him to venture into other income-generating pursuits. Apart from his showbiz gigs, he is currently involved in agri-business, real estate, as well as the food franchise industry. He complements his active income with financial instruments such as an insurance policy with an investment component, health protection insurance, as well as mutual funds. Pacquiao welcomes probe on alleged breach of COVID-19 protocols in Batangas event

The camp of Senator Manny Pacquiao on Sunday said the lawmaker welcomes any possible investigation on alleged violations of COVID-19 health protocols in an event he attended in Batangas.

In a statement, Pacquiao's camp maintained that there were no violations committed during the event.

"We welcome any investigation related to claims that quarantine protocols were violated when we went to Batangas to distribute relief and early Christmas gifts for the people who have suffered so much during the Taal Volcano eruption and the series of typhoons that hit Luzon over the past two months. Before that, we have also distributed relief and financial aid for the fire victims in Bacoor and flood victims in Rizal province and in Marikina," it said.

"It should be clarified however that in all those events, we have tried so hard to ensure that social distancing and health safety protocols are strictly observed. Marshalls were assigned to ensure that all the requirements set by the National Task Force on Covid 19 are implemented. Physical arrangements for all these events were pre-inspected to ensure social distancing and people were checked for face masks and face shields," it added.

Pacquiao's camp also said the photos and videos of the event, which circulated online, do not reflect what happened on the ground.

Photos of Pacquiao distributing relief goods and gifts spread online, with netizens commenting that COVID-19 protocols and physical distancing seemed to have been violated.

Check out the Kapamilya stars who play sports as a hobby | Kapamilya Snaps

In the previous months, we featured some of our favorite celebrities who have found their passion in arts and music and turned this into a fun (and even profitable!) hobby, proving that there’s definitely more to them aside from their talents that they usually exhibit.

And in this Kapamilya Snaps feature, check out the Kapamilya stars who are actually athletic in real life, too, and who play sports as a hobby!

Enchong Dee

First on the list is Enchong Dee, a three-time UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines) Most Valuable Player in swimming. During his athlete days, he did not only prove that he’s a great swimmer, but also showed that he’s one of the best as he won seven gold medals in a single UAAP season. Besides, he brought home several recognitions from international swimming competitions, too!

Nowadays, he still swims but mainly for fun. Enchong’s tip for those who want to go back to swimming or for those who want to try it out is that they need to enjoy and love the sport despite how hard it is and how busy they can get.

Erich Gonzales

Erich Gonzales learned to surf for her 2017 movie “Siargao” with Jericho Rosales and Jasmine Curtis-Smith. Since the famous island is a well-known tourist spot for surfing, the La Vida Lena star did not miss the opportunity to try the water sport herself. We can even see old photos on Instagram where she showed off her sizzling beach bod while enjoying the sun and the waves. Since then, Erich officially earned the title of “surfer chick”.

Jericho Rosales

Another surf enthusiast is Jericho Rosales, who considers Catanduanes as his favorite surfing spot. It’s definitely not a secret that the seasoned actor enjoy the outdoors as he also loves to ride his motorbike during his leisure time. Probably that’s one of the reasons why he fell in love with his wife Kim Jones who’s just as adventurous as him. It’s actually normal seeing Jericho at surfing spots like La Union and Siargao because we know that surfing is already part of his lifestyle and that he considers the coast as his home and safe place. In one of his Instagram posts, he even described his motorbike and surfing board as his "life essentials”.

And just recently, the Halik lead actor and his wife made rounds in the news after they used their surf boards and flair in surfing in saving people in their neighborhood who were stranded at their homes during the Typhoon Ulysses onslaught.

Andi Eigenmann

Andi Eigenmann started surfing in 2016 and not only did it become a hobby for her, but it also paved the way for her to meet the love of her life – her champion surfer-husband Philmar Alipayo. We can actually see in a past IG post of Philmar how he dutifully gave her and her daughter Ellie surfing lessons, even though she was then on the sixth month of her pregnancy to their now one-year old daughter Lilo. Indeed, the actress is living the life she has always dreamed of at present.

Kim Chiu

Kim Chiu is a huge volleyball fan and enjoys playing the sport herself. In the 2019 Star Magic women’s volleyball All-Star Games, Kim led the Red Team to victory! Besides, who would forget that she portrayed volleyball superstar Sisi Rondina when her inspiring life story got featured on Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Aside from playing volleyball, the Chinita Princess also finds joy and fulfillment in joining runs from 10k runs to 16k, until she progressed to 21k.

As athletic as Kim may seem, did you know that the It’s Showtime host actually has asthma. That’s why she was told by her doctor to avoid doing strenuous physical activities. But that didn’t stop Kim from maintaining a healthy lifestyle and doing the things that she loves.

Julia Barretto

Julia Barretto is just as excited about volleyball. She was actually the proud captain for the Blue Team in the 2019 Star Magic women’s volleyball All-Star Games. As the actress disclosed in a past interview, she used to be part of varsity volleyball team in high school where she experienced competing with different schools. She also described volleyball as her first love. "Last Sunday was my first time to play in Araneta. I used to just be an audience member and watch the UAAP volleyball games. At the time, I only wished I had been able to experience something that exciting!” the actress exclaimed after the 2019 All-Star Games.

Piolo Pascual

Piolo Pascual’s secret for staying a dreamy heartthrob despite already being in his 40s could be playing rounds of badminton! Since badminton can be played in pairs, he would sometimes team up with his son Iñigo Pascual. In fact, Piolo was seen competing in a badminton match with Iñigo for a special sports event last year where they also got to interact with their colleagues.

Matteo Guidicelli

If you don’t see Matteo on television, he’s probably out there joining sports competitions. He prepared for his first-ever triathlon in Naga a month after his father bought him a bike. It’s safe to say that triathlon or sports in general will always be part of Matteo’s life as he would even say that a day without doing sports or just any physical activity is a pretty useless day.

Jake Cuenca

Jake Cuenca also earned his abs by joining triathlons. He began to fall in love with the sports during the filming of the daytime sports drama Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin alongside Coleen Garcia, Kim Chiu, and Gerald Anderson.

The Kapamilya actor was actually thankful to them for inspiring him to be active in sports, "’Yong teleserye din namin ni Kim, Gerald and Coleen tungkol siya sa triathlon. Siguro godsend din itong project. Sobrang na-in love ako triathlon na ngayon ay nag-sign up na ako para sa totoong race. So parang sinapuso ko na siya," Jake shared during his interview on Magandang Buhay.

And that same year, he and Gerald competed in the international triathlon competition Ironman 70.3 held in Subic.

Gerald Anderson

Seeking a new challenge and out of curiosity, Gerald Anderson decided to try out triathlon in 2015, and later in 2017, he portrayed an aspiring triathlete in his reunion project with Kim Chiu in Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin. Moreover, we’ve also seen him play basketball in a professional league in the country.

However, aside from joining triathlons and playing basketball, did you know that the actor also tried to play parkour? He was introduced to the sport when he was tapped to play the titular character in the 2009 series Tiagong Akyat, which required him to do stunts himself.

Enzo Pineda

How does Enzo Pineda stay fit and healthy? By learning different sports!

He revealed relieving his stress through boxing and playing golf on weekends. And did you know that he’s also a licensed open water scuba diver and just recently tried out fencing?

Actually, you can name almost every sport there is and you won’t be surprised to hear that Enzo has already tried his hand on that sport. In fact, ever since grade school, he has been an athlete in the sidelines.

“When I was younger, I was more into sports so mahilig ako mag-try ng iba’t ibang klaseng sports. Honestly, when I was in grade school and high school, I was a varsity player in taekwondo, then soccer, saka track-and-field,” Enzo said in an exclusive interview with Entertainment.ABS-CBN.com.

JM de Guzman

JM de Guzman is undoubtedly a tough fighter, as seen in some of the clips of his mixed martial arts moves and sparring sessions that he shares on Instagram. Considering the gym as his second home, he can actually spend hours boxing, wrestling, and circuit training during his free time.

The actor even found a way to exhibit his MMA flair when he portrayed Pinoy MMA champ Ramon Gonzales in an episode of MMK last year. JM had a rigorous preparation for this role, as he took MMA training from Ramon himself to efficiently immerse into the character.Just like these Kapamilya stars, it is never too late to try out something new regardless of your age!

How about you, Kapamilya? What sport do you enjoy or aspire to play?

PBA: Alaska withstands Kiefer's 30 points, puts NLEX on brink

(UPDATED) The Alaska Aces barged into the playoffs and dealt NLEX's own bid a huge blow after a tough 122-119 overtime win over the Road Warriors, Monday evening at the Angeles University Foundation Gym in Angeles City, Pampanga.

The Aces had to weather a 30-point, seven-assist performance from Kiefer Ravena before grabbing their seventh win in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup. They are the first team to wrap up their elimination round schedule, putting together a 7-4 win-loss record.

While Alaska is through to the quarterfinals and still has a chance at a Top 4 finish, NLEX's own playoff bid suffered a huge blow. The Road Warriors saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, and they dropped to 4-6 in the conference.

"It was very difficult," Alaska coach Jeff Cariaso said of the game. "That's what we expected going into this game. We knew how hot NLEX had been in their last three games. They're in shape already, their flow is good, their chemistry is good."

"It's one of those games where we're able to pull it off down the stretch," he added. "So I'm happy with the focus of the guys… They were ready."

Both teams had their chances to win the game in regulation.

Ravena completed an and-1 with under 50 seconds to go that pushed NLEX ahead, 108-106, only for JVee Casio to pounce on a mismatch with JR Quinahan on the other end. The veteran guard zoomed past the NLEX big man for the layup that tied the game with 40 seconds to go.

Ravena bricked a pull-up jumper in NLEX's next possession, but Alaska could not secure the win as Casio's finger-roll hit iron, and time ran out on the Road Warriors.

Alaska pulled away in overtime when Rodney Brondial scored off a loose ball for a 115-113 lead, and then rejected Ravena on the other end. In the ensuing fastbreak, Robbie Herndon set up Mike DiGregorio for the booming triple that made it a five-point game.

NLEX still had its chances. They trailed by just three points, 120-117, after Ravena's layup, but he could not complete the and-1 after also being fouled by Maverick Ahanmisi. The Aces kept the door open for the Road Warriors when DiGregorio missed a jumper, but Raul Soyud and Ravena both misfired on three-pointers that could have tied the game.

A long two-pointer by Quinahan made it a one-possession game with four seconds to go, 121-119, but a split at the line by Abu Tratter was enough to peg the final score and secure the victory for Alaska.

"We just wanted to come out and play aggressive. We knew how big this game was," said Ahanmisi, who scored 12 of his team-high 25 points in the fourth quarter and overtime before fouling out with just over a minute to go. He also had 12 rebounds and four assists in the game.

Casio had a throwback performance, putting up 19 points, while Tratter finished with 16 points.

Squandered in the defeat was Ravena's superb outing, as well as a 24-point, nine-rebound performance from Quinahan. Jericho Cruz added 18 points, and Kevin Alas had 13 points and seven assists.

NLEX no longer has its fate in its hands. They have one game left -- a date against TerraFirma on Wednesday.

However, if Rain or Shine beats TNT Tropang Giga on Tuesday afternoon, the Elasto Painters will complete the quarterfinals cast and eliminate NLEX from contention.

CIGNAL TV/TV5 confirms interest in NCAA, but Fr. Calvo says ‘no vaccine, no opening’ for Season 96

THE National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is on the bidding table but whoever wins between aspirants CIGNAL TV/TV5 and GMA, the league’s shuttered Season 96 won’t open until a vaccine is out against Covid-19.

“No vaccine, no opening,” said Letran’s Fr. Victor Calvo Jr., the NCAA Management Committee chairman of the postponed season.

Calvo said the league is putting extreme priority on the health and safety of the student athletes and has virtually dismissed the potential of putting up a training bubble, saying it would be costly for the NCAA and the schools.

But Calvo intimated to the BusinessMirror that even though the season’s opening is still up in the air, negotiations are ongoing between the league and television networks CIGNAL TV/TV5 and GMA.

CIGNAL TV/TV5 confirmed its interest in airing anew the NCAA games, while GMA’s corporate communications department neither confirmed nor denied the network’s bid.

“Yes, we are in talks and it is our earnest desire to build a long-term partnership with the NCAA,” Robert Galang, Cignal TV/TV5 President and CEO, told BusinessMirror in a text message.

Galang, however, didn’t disclose any detail on the station’s bid to air the games of the country’s oldest collegiate multi-sport league.

“GMA and TV5 are bidding. But I think I don’t have the right to divulge the details because it is [up] for bidding,” Calvo told the BusinessMirror. “We’ll have the result late next week after All Souls Day.”

The NCAA, just like the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, were under a five-year contract with ABS-CBN. But the network shut down due to franchise issues, shoving both leagues on the bidding table.

The UAAP already sealed a five-year contract with the Manuel V. Pangilinan-owned Cignal TV/TV5 last week starting with the league’s similarly postponed Season 83 tentatively set for the first quarter of next year.

“GMA and Cignal TV/TV5 have good things to offer to the league and they are in the final stages of presentation their bids,” Calvo said.

GMA used to air the defunct Shakey’s V League, the National Basketball Association and most of Manny Pacquiao’s early fights in the US.

Cignal TV/TV5, on the other hand, is heavy on its sports programs and extensively airs the Philippine Basketball Association Games. It was also the lead network in last year’s Philippines 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Showbiz personalities appeal to Comelec to stop disenfranchisement of votes in Robredo-Marcos electoral protest

Several movie and television personalities have asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday to prevent the disenfranchisement of millions of votes when the poll body issues its opinion on the election protest filed against Vice President Leni Robredo by former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos.

The personalities, led by actress Agot Isidro, stressed that the poll body’s view is crucial to the final decision that will be issued by the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), on the matter.

Other signatories to the letter are Pia Magalona, Noel Ferrer, Carlos Aguilos, Kalila Aguilos, Maysch Bay, Bayang Barrios, Iza Calzado, Enchong Dee, Reymundo Domingo, Bituin Escalante, Arman Ferrer, Sweet Plantado-Tiongson, Jet Valle, and Adrienne Vergara.

The High Court had earlier asked the Comelec and the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) to comment on the election protest filed by Marcos.

The celebrities pointed out that the Comelec made a stand for truth and fairness when it informed the PET that the 25-percent threshold must be used for the recount of ballots, with the poll body recognizing the “disservice to change the rules in the middle of the proceedings.”

“This time, we are appealing to the poll body to underscore the enforcement of election rules, particularly Comelec Resolution No. 9720 and Rule 65 of the PET Rules, as means to resolve this protest,” they said.

The Comelec, through Resolution No. 9720, indicated the importance of obtaining reasonable recovery from the pilot provinces as the lack of it could lead to the dismissal of the protest without further proceedings.

Rule 65 of the PET also states that an election protest may be dismissed if a protestant fails to gain substantial recovery from the identified pilot provinces.

In Marcos’ case, he failed to gain substantial recovery during the recount of ballots from the pilot provinces of Iloilo, Negros Oriental, and Camarines Sur that he himself identified.

Robredo even gained more than 15,000 votes following the recount, which is, according to the celebrities, “a reason enough to dismiss the protest by virtue of Rule 65.”

“We firmly appeal to the Comelec to uphold the implementation of PET Rule 65 and Comelec Resolution No. 9720 so as not to disenfranchise millions of voters and to preserve our election processes and the faith of the Filipino people that justice has no color,” they said.
