Why Enchong Dee no longer makes New Year’s Resolutions

Time check: Another year is almost here. But, before we close the door on 2018, there’s one last thing to take care of – New Year’s resolutions! And even Pinoy celebrities are no exception to this as they too reflect on their aspirations.

Except for swimmer-actor Enchong Dee. In a recent interview with Bulletin Entertainment, he revealed he stopped making those three years ago.

“I believe that whatever resolutions I want to do in my life, I can start doing it any time of the year,” came the simple explanation.

Enchong’s main goal in recent years (and also this New Year) has always been to stay healthy.

“I remember, like, in 2017, I got sick six times. But I’m so happy this year that I didn’t get any fever, cough or whatever illness. So I want to continue that. I also make sure to pamper myself from time to time.”

The 30-year-old revealed he will invest in more businesses. This includes having another branch of Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken and Sauce Bar, of which he is brand ambassador. The homegrown restaurant recently found a new home owned by Bryan Tiu at the Venice Grand Canal mall.

“Peri-Peri is such an easy place to get lost in. There’s the satisfaction of eating great-tasting food, the upbeat energy that grabs you the moment you step inside, and the passionate colors that entice – these things create such a distinct atmosphere. I hope in the coming years, we will continue to grow and excite more tastebuds, the way only Peri-Peri can,” he said.

Born in the year 1988, Enchong’s Chinese Zodiac animal is Dragon. Asked what qualities he got from it, he mouthed “determination.”

Proud Pinoy

We asked Enchong to share his thoughts on the alleged “Aussie ownership” of some Australian tabloids to Filipina Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.

Note that few days after the coronation night, an Australian media outlet also took pride in Catriona’s win, even crossing out “Philippines” from its headline to replace with “Queensland.”

The beauty queen was born and raised in Cairns, Queensland to Scottish-born Australian father, Ian Gray, from Fraserburgh, and Filipino mother Normita Ragas Magnayon from Oas, Albay.

Since Enchong is considered Filipino-Chinese, has he ever experienced identity crisis?

“Never,” he shot back. “For me, I’m 100% Filipino and I am proud of that. I can tell the whole world that I’m a proud Filipino.”

He weighed in on the subject.

“I think it’s a matter of who invested in you more, who groomed you. We can tell that it’s the Filipinos who molded, practiced Catriona for the pageant. So we can really claim more on her win.”

Goes with ‘empathy’

Enchong is among local celebrities against bullying. The subject was brought up in light of the recent Ateneo bullying incident though the actor spoke in general terms on the matter.

He recalled he also once figured in a fistfight, something he is not “proud” to share.

“I pushed my classmate to the trash can,” he said. “I feel sad every time I remember that.”

Enchong said empathy is very important to him.

“I can advice the bullies to, you know, try to understand that particular person you want to bully. Try to be in his/her shoes. At the end of the day, everything goes with maturity.”

ABS-CBN, UAAP renew partnership

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines will remain a Kapamilya for another full decade.

ABS-CBN and the country's premier collegiate league formally inked another 5-year deal Wednesday to continue the partnership that molded varsity players into stars and household names.

ABS-CBN President and CEO Carlo Katigbak together with UAAP president Nilo Ocampo of Season 81 host National University and the league’s Board members led the contract signing held at Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

"ABS-CBN did its part in making the different sporting events really exciting and accessible to the millions of UAAP fans not only throughout the Philippines but elsewhere in the world," said league president Mateo.

The new contract will be effective when the Ateneo de Manila University hosts Season 82.

ABS-CBN started airing UAAP events 19 years ago and the league got a serious shot in the arm on its growth, promotion and reach through comprehensive broadcast.

Part of the extension will have the full commitment of ABS-CBN to feature other sports aside from the popular basketball and volleyball through different platforms. The UAAP has 15 sports disciplines in the men’s, women’s and high school divisions.

“ABS-CBN will be increasing the coverage of the games that we will have. Not just for basketball pati na rin ang women’s volleyball, as you know is doing very well, men’s volleyball and pati na rin ang football,” said March Ventosa, head of ABS-CBN Narrowcast.

“We will keep exploring their game lineup to see which of the sports are worth full coverage,” he added.

ABS-CBN through its sports channel S&A 23 and S&A HD will again be the home of UAAP while some games will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2.

All televised games will also be available via live streaming at sports.abs-cbn.com.

McEwen shares secret to Pinoy cyclists

Three-time Tour De France sprint champion Robbie McEwen said that Filipino cyclists have the potential to become superstars in the sport.

“Sky is the limit but you have to start building a cycling culture, getting more and more young athletes into cycling to discover the superstar whose going to make it,” McEwen, 46, told The Manila Times after the news conference ushering in the Sun Life Cycle PH at the Seda Hotel in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

“Just getting more kids into sports and find that real, super talent who can take it all the way.”

Matteo Guidicelli (third from left) and triathlete August Benedicto (left) lead a group of riders at the Kalayaan Flyover in the Long Ride (40km) category of the second Sun Life Cycle PH at Bonifacio Global City on Saturday. The event, organized by Sunrise Events, Inc. and held to promote a healthy lifestyle, was graced by three-time Tour de France green jersey winner Robbie McEwen and other Star Magic artists.CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

The 2002, 2004 and 2006 Tour de France green jersey winner also told Filipino cyclists that consistent and gradual progress is the key to success in the sport.

“Every year, I have done some separate golden workshops with some Filipino national riders, and I told them to take it step by step to become the best in the Philippines, and take the next step to racing the Asian tours,” McEwen added.

McEwen, with businessman Wilfred Uytengsu, actors Piolo Pascual, Jake Cuenca, Enchong Dee, and Matteo Guidicelli were among the celebrities that took part in Sun Life Cycle PH on Saturday in BGC to promote cycling and a healthy lifestyle.

Five for Five: Jessie Lacuna, Aldo Batungbacal bid farewell in record-breaking fashion

After the Ateneo de Manila University bagged their fourth straight UAAP championship in Season 80, graduating senior Aldo Batungbacal had openly announced his desire to forgo a fifth and final playing year in Season 81, while Jessie Lacuna kept mum on his future plans.

Fast forward to the 81st UAAP Swimming Championship, where both potential Ateneo sports hall of famers played key roles in helping Ateneo accumulate 475 points and delivering a fifth straight UAAP men’s division championship for the Blue Eagles.

This is Ateneo’s third championship for the season and sixth overall in the Men’s Swimming Championships.

Ultimately, the emergence of the De La Salle University – who ended up second this season with 380 points – helped in convincing both swimmers to play out their final year.

Two-time Olympian Lacuna capped a remarkable five year stint in the UAAP by collecting his 33rd individual gold medal in the 200m butterfly with a record-breaking performance. His time of 2:02.69 broke his old mark of 2:03.93 established in his debut season back in 2014.

Lacuna also had two relay golds to his name for a total of 35 gold medals in the UAAP, the most any participant in the UAAP can get. He was also named this season’s Most Valuable Player, his fourth in five years.

DLSU’s super-rookie Sacho Ilustre continued to challenge Lacuna by clocking in at 2:05.96 in the 200m butterfly to collect his fifth silver medal. All his silver medals were in events Lacuna swam in. UP’s Andrae Pogiongko took the bronze medal in 2:12.77.

Batungbacal also made his final day in the UAAP memorable by topping the 200m breaststroke at 2:21.75, and the 1500m freestyle with a new UAAP record time of 16:35.33, resetting his old 16:42.42 record.

He also graduates as the most-decorated athlete in modern UAAP history by bagging his ninth overall championship with the same university – four with the Ateneo Juniors’ squad in its 11-title reign and five with the seniors’ team.

Ateneo’s own super-rookie Ianiko Limfilipino tried to stay close to Batungbacal in both the 200m breaststroke (2:24.62) and 1500m freestyle (17:02.17) to collect his third and fourth silver medals. Another DLSU rookie Yuri Ilustre, who happens to be Sacho’s cousin, and UST’s former rookie of the year Jux Solita, brought home the bronze medals in the 200m breaststroke (2:28.00) and the 1500m freestyle (17:27.94), respectively.

In the other events of the final day, Red Silvestre of DLSU flexed his muscles in the sprint events by ruling the 50m backstroke (27.88 seconds) and 50m freestyle (24.35 seconds) while the 400m medley relay team of Aki Cariño, Carlo Silva, Getty Reyes, and Jethro Chua pocketed the gold with a new UAAP record to boot as they finished in 4:03.49.

DLSU rookies Christian Sy (28.26 seconds) and Jexter Chua (28.46 seoconds) finished the 50m backstroke in second and third place, respectively. Ateneo’s Drei Buhain (24.58 seconds) took the silver in the 50m freestyle to sneak past Sacho Ilustre (24.60 seconds), who finished 3rd. In the 400m medley relay, UST landed second at 4:04.72, while UP were third at 4:04.80.

Although there were numerous rookies who made waves this season, it was Sacho Ilustre who claimed the Rookie of the Year award for collecting five silver medals and 2 bronze medals.

While Ateneo enjoy their fifth straight UAAP championship in Season 81, it is DLSU and their slew of top caliber rookies who are considered as favorites to finally dethrone the champions in the 82nd UAAP season. Ateneo are set to rebuild their swimming program after the graduation of a number of their mainstays.

Ricky Lo writes about the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand

"Let's hope that ABS-CBN's 2020 closure or shutdown is a FAKE NEWS. Buhay pa rin ang KAPAMILYA!"

Spotted at the contract signing ceremony were: Ambassador Marciano Paynor, Jr., Former Senator Vicente Sotto III, Solar Entertainment Corporation President and CEO Wilson Tieng, PAGCOR chairman Efraim Genuino, Philippine Olympic Committe chairman Jose Peping Cojuangco and Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Butch Ramirez

At that time, ABS-CBN, GMA, PTV and ABC, are broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week due to the live coverage of this sporting event. Many showbiz insiders are talking about the phrase "gising dalawampu't apat na oras ang aming pagsasahimpapawid at ang coverage na walang tulugan at pahinga ng himpapawid" (wake-up 24 hours of our broadcasting and the coverage that does not sleep and resting of broadcasting).

GMA was the only local network to go on 24-hour, non-stop broadcasting in 2005.

At that time, it would be setting up their banners in all shopping mall activity centers nationwide for the live broadcast streaming.

At the Westside Studio of Broadway Centrum and Studio 1 and 2 of GMA Network Center in Quezon City, the national hosts of this coverage are: Mike Enriquez, Jessica Soho, Mel Tiangco, Pia Guanio, Ali Sotto, Angelique Lazo, Vicky Morales, Paolo Bediones, Atom Araullo, Pia Arcangel, Arnold Clavio, Connie Sison, Mickey Ferriols, Miriam Quiambao, Ryan Agoncillo, Suzi Entrata, Kara David, Nina Castro, Lyn Ching, Margaux Salcedo, Arnell Ignacio, Susan Enriquez, Lala Roque, Tisha Silang, Antoinette Taus, Iya Villania, Dingdong Dantes, Butch Francisco and Tito Sotto.

Jacob-Sandejas are joined by Milo commercial models AJ Perez, Kyle Arrieta, Eugene Herrera, Prince Carlos and Franco Hernandez.

Ang mga artista natin na kasali sa SEA Games sa Thailand? I can only count three.

Japoy Lizardo - ABS-CBN star magic talent - he is the defending champion in pinweight sa Taekwondo. Almadro sees nothing wrong with 'Walang duwag na Ravena' pep talk

COACH Oliver Almadro’s words of encouragement seemed to fire up Dani Ravena, and it drew mixed reactions on social media.

Almadro tried to motivate Ravena to go for the saves, with the match tied at a set each and a point separating Ateneo-Motolite and Pocari Sweat in the third set of their PVL Open Conference match on Sunday at Imus Sports Complex in Imus City, Cavite.

“Believe me, you’re very good, don’t doubt. Ravena ka, walang duwag na Ravena. Do you understand?” Almadro told the sophomore Lady Eagle, daughter of TNT coach Bong Ravena and former volleyball player Mozzy, and sister of basketball stars Kiefer and Thirdy.

“You know what you’re doing, sometimes nagda-doubt ka lang kung tama ‘yung gagawin mo or hindi,” he continued. “Just follow the system, follow the process, start at the line then move, do you understand? You’re doing good, believe me.”

The words seemed to motivate Ravena as she registered 16 digs and 11 excellent receptions in the four-set win.

While Almandro was praised online for the motivational talk, some believe it was unnecessary.

But Almadro believes it worked, not only for Ravena but the rest of the squad.

“Siguro, kasi nakabalik eh. Siguro nakatulong ‘yun,” said Almadro.

“Sana mga ganoon ko, alam niyo naman hyper ako eh, sana ‘yung mga ganoon ko mag-click sa utak nila. ‘Yun ang hinahabol ko eh,” he said.

“Wala naman talagang Ravenang duwag eh, tama naman,” he added.

ATENEO-Motolite defeated Pocari Sweat-Air Force, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 30-28, to start its campaign in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference on Sunday at Imus Sports Complex in Imus City, Cavite.

Veterans Kat Tolentino and skipper Bea de Leon led the way for the Lady Eagles with 19 and 12 points, respectively, while rookie Vanessa Gandler made a good impression with nine markers and 14 digs.

“Kami syempre, we’re super, super happy that we won our first game. It’s a good start, its a good sign for us,” said de Leon.

It was also Oliver Almadro’s first win with the Lady Eagles after taking over in May.

Kim Gequillana also had nine points and Maddie Madayag scored eight for Ateneo.

Myla Pablo scored 30 points for Pocari Sweat-Air Force, while Jeanette Panaga had 16 markers.

Pep talk from La Salle coach brings out best from Encho Serrano

ENCHO Serrano’s first two games in the UAAP didn’t reflect why he’s one of the most celebrated rookies entering this season.

All of that changed with a little pep talk from La Salle coach Louie Gonzalez.

The former high school star from Pampanga finally showed glimpses of his tremendous potential on Sunday, scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds in La Salle's 82-72 win over University of the East.

All it took was a little talk with his coach, who asked the high-flyer to focus on defense and let the offense come to him.

Serrano obliged.

“Actually hindi pa talaga ako ganun ka-comportable, before the game sinabihan ako ni coach na, ‘Hindi ako susuko sa 'yo. Dahan-dahanin natin yan,’ dahil first time ko naman to at walang pang experience,” said Serrano.

“Sabi niya, ‘Basta kuha ka lang ng kumpyansa. Pag pasok mo gusto mo umopensa kaagad, wag mong ilagay yun sa isip mo. Unahin mo muna yung depensa hanggang sumunod sa opensa mo,’” he added.

That was all the motivation Serrano needed as he looked a lot more confident on the floor, pumping much-needed energy into the Green Archers' offense off the bench while playing solid defense the entire game.

“Ngayon pag pasok ko pinakita ko talaga kay coach na hindi ko sasayangin ang opportunity na binigay niya sakin, dedepensa talaga ako ng 100 percent. Lumabas naman at sumunod pa ang opensa. Okay naman,” he added.

However, Serrano insisted he’s still far from where he wants to be, saying there are still a lot of facets in his game that he needs to work on particularly his free-throw shooting after going 1-of-6 from the stripe.

“Yung free throws ko, ang dami kong miss kanina, pinapasok ko kasi sa isip ko na na-pressure ako, inuunahan ko yung sarili ko ng pressure na baka mag miss ako. Siguro kailangan lang, mag-start ako sa practice dahil marami pa akong iimprove.”

FAR Eastern University came out guns firing and never looked back as it tore through University of the Philippines, 89-73, in the UAAP Season 81 on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Coming off an upset loss at the hands of University of Santo Tomas last week, the Tamaraws laid the brunt of their rage on the Fighting Maroons as they opened the game with an 8-0 blast and never looked back.

Jasper Parker and Axel Iñigo set the tone early as they charged through the Maroons defense in the first half like bulls tearing through red cloth, before continuing to pounce on the Maroons in the second half – leading by as many as 25 points near the end of the third period.

The closest the Fighting Maroons ever got was within 14 early in the fourth but that the Tamaraws responded with bombs from beyond the arc to stymy that rally.

“It was a defensive game para sa amin. Yung opensa namin, bonus lang. Good job by everyone, the players stuck to our gameplan,” said FEU coach Olsen Racela as they improved to 2-1 for the season.

“Again, the run was an effect of our defense kaya nagalit ako nung nag 10-0 run sila (nung fourth). Hindi kami dapat nag-stop ng offense with offense. UP had an off night. Again, maganda rin yung naging execution namin,” he added.

Prince Orizu had a perfect night with 15 points on 7-7 shooting alongside seven boards while putting the clamps on Bright Akhuetie who finishe with nine points on 4-11 shooting.

Arvin Tolentino added 13 points, Wendell Comboy finished with 12 while Parker and Iñigo  finished with 11 points apiece.

Javi Gomez de Liano led the Maroons with 15 points as they dropped their second consecutive game following a rousing start to the season.

The scores:

FEU 89 – Orizu 15, Tolentino 13, Comboy 12, Parker 11, Inigo 11, Cani 8, Ebona 8, Tuffin 5, Stockton 3, Gonzales 2, Escoto 1, Bayquin 0

UP 73 – Gomez de Liano Ja 15, Gomez de Liano Ju 13, Manzo 11, Desiderio 10, Akhuetie 9, Prado 8, Vito 3, Murrell 2, Lim 2, Jaboneta 0, Tungcab 0, Gozum 0, Dario 0, Spencer 0

In-form Phoenix continues to roll, deals Magnolia first loss

PHOENIX notched its third straight win, handing Magnolia a 95-82 defeat on Sunday in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Eugene Phelps had 36 points, 20 rebounds, and four blocks as the Fuel Masters improved  to 5-1 (win-loss) and extended the best start to a conference in franchise history.

As a misfiring Magnolia side slumped to its first loss in three games after making just 29 of 90 shots, Phoenix continued its rise since acquiring Calvin Abueva in a trade.

“For me, one of the best ang Magnolia especially sa defense. We were able to put a clamp on their offensive guys especially in the third quarter,” said Phoenix coach Louie Alas.

Phoenix is now in second place in the standings, just behind unbeaten Blackwater.

The Fuel Masters went on a 7-0 run to open a 82-72 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Phelps' two-hand jam extended the lead to 87-75 with 3:33 left.

Matthew Wright had 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Justin Chua had 12 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks for Phoenix, which also got nine points and 10 rebounds from Calvin Abueva.

Romeo Travis had 28 points, 19 rebounds, and two blocks but made just 11 of 21 shots, missing a number of attempts from point-blank range when the game got away from the Hotshots in the final stretch.

Jio Jalalon, Ian Sangalang, and Mark Barroca each added 11 points for the Hotshots. Jalalon, however, fouled out with five minutes left in the game.

The scores:

Phoenix 95 – Phelps 36, Wright 13, Chua 12, Revilla 9, Jazul 9, Abueva 9, Perkins 7, Wilson 0, Intal 0.

Magnolia 82 – Travis 28, Jalalon 11, Sangalang 11, Barroca 11, Lee 8, Ramos 6, dela Rosa 3, Melton 2, Galaminda 2, Reavis 0, Herndon 0, Pascual 0, Brondial 0.

Bataan Risers make it eight MPBL wins in row after holding off Sharks

Former JRU star Bryon Villarias shows the way or Bataan. PHOTO: BATAAN RISERS FACEBOOK PAGE
BATAAN and Makati continued their impressive run in the MPBL Datu Cup at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig.

Ex-pro Byron Villarias came away with a double double as the Risers survived a tough stand by the Cebu Sharks, 76-69, for a league-best eighth straight win.

The cousin of NLEX Road Warrior rookie guard Kiefer Ravena scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Two more others finished in double figures – Pamboy Raymundo with 12 and Jeepy Faundo with 10 - as Bataan improved to 8-1 for the solo lead in the Northern Division.

Villarias’ double-double effort was matched by Cedric Ablaza, who had 15 points and 10 boards in powering the Makati Skyscrapers to a tense 67-64 triumph over the Valenzuela Classic.

The 6-foot-3 Ablaza joined forces with ex-pro Rudy Lingganay in scoring the last three points from the free throw line for Makati, which won a second straight game to improve to 6-3.

Valenzuela, which dropped to 2-7 after a fifth straight loss, had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Rocky Acidre’s three-point try failed to hit the mark in the last two seconds.

Olsen Racela relieved to see FEU Tamaraws quickly bounce back

OLSEN Racela is delighted with how his players responded following Far Eastern University’s upset loss at the hands of the University of Santo Tomas last week.

Displaying the fire and tenacity that was sorely missing in that game, the Tamaraws came up with their most impressive outing of the UAAP Season 81 so far, blowing past University of the Philippines on Tuesday.

“Good bounce back win. It had to take a game like we played against UST for us to really play things possession by possession,” said Racela.

For the 47-year-old coach, it takes the pain of a loss to truly make his players realize the warnings that he’s been talking about.

And playing a strong team like the Fighting Maroons, he’s happy that they finally showed up.

“Hindi minor yun, major yun. Of course, yun yung klailangan namin matutunan. I always remind these players about that pero kailangan ata ma-experience muna nila,” Racela said.

“Hindi enough yung, parang akong magulang e. Di ba gaganyanin mo yung bata tapos papasok dito, lalabas dito, unless ma-experience nila talaga yung sinasabi mo, dun nila maiingraine sa utak nila. I think that’s what happened,” Racela added.

Racela believes the nine-day break allowed them to reflect on their mishaps and refocus on what they really wanted to do.

“I gave them two days off. Para makarecover sila. Killer week yun para sa amin eh,” said Racela.

“That was also an opportunity for us to focus on our fundamentals. I think It showed on this game.”

Prince Orizu eclipses Bright Akhuetie in matchup of top big men

PRINCE Orizu finally got a chance to play with his good pal in Bright Akhuetie in the UAAP Season 81 and it’s pretty clear who got the better of that match-up.

Orizu’s Far Eastern University came away with an 89-73 win over fellow Nigerian Akhuetie and University of the Philippines on Sunday in San Juan.

The 6-foot-8 slotman had 15 points and seven rebounds while also putting the clamps on the highly-touted Akhuetie who finished with nine points on 3-11 shooting.

“Bright is like one of my best friends. We push each other to do our best because he's a really good player,” said Orizu.

“I just needed to stand my ground because I did not want to be the friend who loses,” he added.

As Akhuetie continued to miss, Orizu was there picking his spots, making all of his seven shots to continue what has been an impressive season so far.

“Did not know that actually. I only knew about it when my teammates told me about it. We were focused on our defense and executing our offense so the shots just sort of came for me,” he said.

Coming off a disappointing loss against the University of Santo Tomas last week where he saw a career night of 25 points and 15 rebounds go down the drain, Orizu was determined to translate his stellar individual play to a win.

This time around, they got the results that they’ve wanted.

“It's all about about defense which Coach O (Olsen Racela) has been preaching a lot. Every since the pre-season, he was talking about the defensive game. We came short in UST because we didn't do very well on defense,” Orizu said.

“So I talked to my teammates and my coaches about how we can come back stronger. We remembered on how we played defense against La Salle. The offense itself just came in itself. We are more of a defensive team.”

Wolves granting Butler trade request after contrasting desires by management

AFTER keeping one of their stars, The Minnesota Timberwolves are eager to part ways with their other.

Following their move to sign Karl-Anthony Towns to a five-year, $190-million extension, the Wolves are determined to trade Jimmy Butler.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported the development on Sunday, Manila time.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN solidified the report, saying Wolves owner Glen Taylor has instructed president and head coach Tom Thibodeau and general manager Scott Layden to put Butler on the trading block, ordering them to act swiftly on the matter.
Butler has been basically requesting for a trade after saying he has no intention to re-sign with the Wolves next summer. And it seems the Western conference club has given in to his wishes.
Layden, Wojnarowski said, has tried to deny inquiries from other teams about the availability of Butler, but the big boss has other plans.

Etheridge surrenders five goals as Aguero, Manchester City blank Cardiff

CARDIFF, Wales — Sergio Aguero celebrated signing a new contract with Manchester City by scoring the opening goal in a 5-0 win over Cardiff in the English Premier League on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time).

The Argentina striker's fourth league goal of the season came on his 300th appearance for City, which bounced back from its surprise midweek loss to Lyon in the Champions League.

Bernardo Silva, Ikay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez — with two second-half goals as a substitute — also scored at Cardiff City Stadium as City recorded a fifth win in the opening six games of its title defense.

City announced on Friday that Aguero penned a one-year extension to his contract, tying him to the club until 2021 and likely meaning he'll see out a decade at Etihad Stadium.

The fans' favorite was back in the starting lineup after getting dropped to the bench against Lyon and was dangerous throughout, getting his goal in the 32nd by finishing off a squared ball by Bernardo.

The Portugal playmaker turned scorer three minutes later when he flicked in a cross from Leroy Sane.

Gundogan curled in a classy third just before halftime after exchanging passes with Raheem Sterling, before Mahrez scored in the 67th — with his first since joining in the offseason from Leicester — soon after replacing Aguero and again in the 89th.

ABS-CBN sets record straight on Nestle report

ABS-CBN News had no intention to cause misinformation when it published two stories about food and beverage giant Nestle's possible pullout from the Philippines last week.

ABS-CBN News' story, published on Sept. 6, on Nestle's plans in the Philippines, was based on a report from Nikkei Asian Review, a credible Japanese business news agency.

Following a clarification from Nestle on Sept. 7, and subsequent online criticism from administration supporters, ABS-CBN News re-validated the basis for Nikkei story, which was also carried as far back as Sept. 3 by the Manila Bulletin and the Manila Standard. The Philippine Star published its version on Sept. 5.

There was no misrepresentation of comments made by Ernesto Mascenon, Senior Vice-President and Head of Corporate Affairs at Nestle's Philippine unit.

In an interview with reporters, Mascenon was asked about the second tranche of tax reforms aimed at companies, to which he replied:

"That's what we're requesting them, that TRAIN 2 address the disadvantage of the local manufacturers who use local agricultural products against those who are importing finished products especially from ASEAN."

Pressed how local manufacturers should benefit from tax reform, he said: "How can we become competitive? Is there a way? Kasi otherwise, the option for us is to, we will close down our manufacturing here and just move to Indonesia or Vietnam or Malaysia and import."

Nestle issued its clarification on Sept. 7, one day after the ABS-CBN report. ABS-CBN News published the clarification promptly on Sept. 7, which said "Nestle Philippines is not planning to close any of its manufacturing facilities in the Philippines.”

To avoid confusion, ABS-CBN News also updated the Sept. 6 story, to tell readers that Nestle has clarified the statement of its own official.

ABS-CBN News reported truthfully on the issue. We report on official comments as they are made, and report on succeeding statements, even if they are official denials.

Mga Makabayang Awitin (Philippine Patriotic Songs)

Ang Pambansang Awit ng Pilipinas
(Philippine National Anthem)

Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng Silanganan
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay

Lupang hinirang
Duyan ka ng magiting
Sa manlulupig
Di ka pasisiil

Sa dagat at bundok
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw;
May dilag and tula
At awit sa paglayang minamahal.

Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y
Tagumpay na nagniningning,
Ang bituin at araw niya
Kailan pa ma'y di magdidilim.

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;
Aming ligaya na pag may mang-aapi,
Ang mamatay ng dahil sa'yo.

Bayan Ko
(My Country)

Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak
Pag-ibig ang sa kanyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilag

At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
Dayuhan ay nahalina
Bayan ko, binihag ka
Nasadlak sa dusa

Ibon mang may layang lumipad
Kulungin mo at umiiyak
Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag
Ang di magnasang makaalpas

Pilipinas kong minumutya
Pugad ng luha ko't dalita
Aking adhika
Makita kang sakdal laya

Pilipinas Kong Mahal
(My Beloved Philippines)

Ang bayan ko'y tanging ikaw
Pilipinas kong mahal
Ang puso ko at buhay man
Sa iyo'y ibibigay
Tungkulin ko'y gagampanan
Na laging kang paglingkuran
Ang laya mo'y babantayan
Pilipinas kong hirang

Ako ay Pilipino
(I am a Filipino)

Ako ay Pilipino
Ang dugo'y maharlika
Likas sa aking puso
Adhikaing kay ganda
Sa Pilipinas na aking bayan
Lantay na Perlas ng Silanganan
Wari'y natipon ang kayamanan
ng Maykapal
Bigay sa 'king talino
Sa mabuti lang laan
Sa aki'y katutubo
Ang maging mapagmahal
Ako ay Pilipino, ako ay Pilipino
Isang bansa, 'sang diwa
ang minimithi ko
Sa bayan ko't bandila
Laan buhay ko't diwa
Ako ay Pilipino
Pilipinong totoo
Ako ay Pilipino, ako ay Pilipino
Taas noo kahit kanino
Ang Pilipino ay ako.
Ako ay Pilipino, ako ay Pilipino
Taas noo kahit kanino
Ang Pilipino ay ako.

Panatang Makabayan

Original Version

Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas
Ito ang aking lupang sinilangan.
Ito ang tahanan ng aking lahi
Ako'y kanyang kinukupkop at tinutulungan,

Upang maging malakas;
Maligaya at kapakipakinabang.
Bilang ganti ay diringgin ko
Ang payo ng aking mga magulang.

Susundin ko ang mga
Tuntunin ng aking paaralan;
Tutuparin ko ang mga tungkulin ng
Isang mamamayang makabayan
At masunurin sa batas.

Paglilingkuran ko ang aking bayan
Nang walang pag-iimbot
At nang buong katapatan.
Sisikapin kong maging
Isang tunay na Pilipino
Sa isip, sa salita, at sa gawa.

Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas,
Aking lupang sinilangan,
Tahanan ng aking lahi;
Kinukupkop ako at tinutulungang
Maging malakas, masipag at marangal.

ng aking magulang,
Susundin ko ang tuntunin ng paaralan,
Tutuparin ko ang tungkulin
Ng mamamayang makabayan:
Naglilingkod, nag-aaral at nagdarasal
Nang buong katapatan.

Iaalay ko ang aking buhay,
pangarap, pagsisikap

Ildefonso brothers, NU spoil Ayo's UST coaching debut

The NU Bulldogs hold off a late UST run to dispatch the Tigers and new coach Aldin Ayo

Ildefonso brothers Dave and Shaun starred as the National U Bulldogs tripped the University of Santo Tomas Tigers, 75-70, at the start of their campaign in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, September 8 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Dave Ildefonso had a marvelous debut with a team-high 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. His brother Shaun tallied a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards.

Senegalese big man Issa Gaye was a defensive monster with 6 points, 7 blocks and 4 boards to also lift the Bulldogs, who held off a late UST run and spoiled the coaching debut of former champion La Salle mentor Aldin Ayo.

After a back and forth first half, the upstart Bulldogs broke away in the third quarter as they outscored the lost Tigers, 21-9, for a 54-37 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

Boosted by Gilas cadet Troy Rike, the Ildefonso brothers showed their versatility on offense with hard drives and pinpoint shooting as Jamike Jarin’s squad created a double-digit separation.

However, UAAP juniors MVP CJ Cansino changed that in the final frame with 6 straight points for UST, ending with a rare 4-point play to slash the NU lead to 8, 60-52.

Cameroonian big man Steve Akomo brought it down to 7, 60-67, with a mid-range jumper at the 4:10 mark.

In the end, UST’s run was all for nothing as NU's John Lloyd Clemente was left open on the break for the dagger layup, 74-68, with 25 seconds left.

Despite, the win, Jarin found a lot to improve on.“[Us] coaches, we’re not satisfied,” he said post-game.

“We played really good in the 3rd quarter and all of a sudden, we didn’t play selflessly in the 4th quarter," added Jarin. "That only shows that we really have a young team. We need to mature fast in order to compete this season.”

But Jarin gave credit to his young guns. “I look good because of the way they play,” he said.

Super rookies Cansino and Dave Ildefonso made noise in the first half amid struggling team vets as they led both their squads with 10 points apiece.

Cansino wound up leading the Tigers with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Renzo Subido added 15 points, albeit on a horrid 5-of-24 (21%) clip.

The Scores

NU 75 – Ildefonso D. 19, Ildefonso S. 10, Joson 8, Clemente 6, Gaye 6, Rike 6, Aquino 4, Sinclair 4, Galinato 4, Yu 3, Gallego 3, Diputado 2, Morido 0.

UST 70 – Cansino 20, Subido 15, Akomo 12, Lee 6, Caunan 6, Zamora 5, Huang 4, Bataller 2, Cosejo 0, Marcos 0, Bonleon 0.

Green Archers dedicating UAAP campaign to heroine Ian Lariba

DE La Salle is dedicating its whole UAAP Season 81 campaign to its late table tennis icon Yan Lariba.

As the La Salle community mourns the loss of Lariba, who passed away at the young age of 23 late Sunday night after battling leukemia, athletic director Emmanuel Calanog said the school will be dedicating Season 81 to the 2016 Rio de Janiero Olympian through the #4LaSalleYan battle cry on social media.

“Actually from last year ‘yung hashtag namin normally, we have a theme for the UAAP Season from #LabanLaSalleYan we started out kasi ‘4 La Salle’ which is really on playing for La Salle and hopefully going for our fourth general championship so it’s a number 4 La Salle now we added 4LaSalleYan,” Calanog explained.

“Aside from those two, It’s really dedicating this season to Yanyan and the way she approached her UAAP career, how she played, how she was a student-athlete and hopefully, it will inspire our athletes to play and be motivated as we enter this UAAP season,” he added.

Larriba’s wake is at St. Peter Memorial Chapel in Commonwealth and the public viewing begins on Tuesday at 12 noon until Wednesday before her remains will be transferred to Cagayan de Oro.

Calanog said that they have yet to decide on a long-term tribute for Lariba, but said the La Salle community will pay homage to its fallen heroine during a pep rally on Tuesday.

“Well ‘yung mga ganun kasi that’s something that we really have to sit down and discuss,” he said. “But definitely tomorrow, I guess there will be some sharing kasi tomorrow’s our pep rally, part of it will really probably in honor of Yanyan aside from trying to motivate the athletes as we enter Season 81.”

Before the press conference for Season 81 started on Thursday, UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag paid tribute to the three-time MVP and two-time Athlete of the Year, who went undefeated in her five years in the collegiate ranks while also excelling in academics as a consistent dean’s lister.

“As a person, she was very humble and unassuming and  had a very vibrant and happy disposition that rubbed off on those who were fortunate enough to be around her,” Saguisag said. “Yanyan will be missed. While we mourn her passing, let us also take occasion to celebrate her life, a life that most of us can only dream of. But most importantly in her last days, I guess Yanyan  reminded us that sport is a platform, a tool that can be used to do good as she spoke about her bout with Cancer.”

“As the Good Book says, Yanyan fought the good fight (2Timothy 4:7-8). She has passed on the torch to us  and we must carry on,” he added.

De La Salle basketball team captain Kib Montalbo said that the Green Archers were saddened by the loss of their schoolmate.

“We actually prayed for her bago mag-start ‘yung training siyempre parang she’s a big part of us, kasi she’s a legend and a hardworker,” he said. “Sinasabi nga namin ni coach (Louie Gonzales) na ‘yun pa ba ‘yung mga tao na walang ginagawang mali like she’s really a good person. You can’t really tell time, if your time’s up.”

Montalbo’s girlfriend and De La Salle Lady Spiker Desiree Cheng is a close friend of Lariba.

“Kilala ko siya personally I think batchmate ko siya or one year higher siya sa akin and close siya kay Des, girlfriend ko. Close sila, nakasama ko na rin siya minsan,” he said.

Filipino Olympian Yan Lariba passes away

Ian “Yanyan” Lariba, who represented the Philippines in the table tennis competition of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, died late Sunday after a long battle with leukemia. She was 23.

The Philippine Sports Commission broke the news of Lariba’s passing in its official Twitter account.

Lariba was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2016, a few months after her Olympic stint. A standout of the De La Salle University table tennis squad, she led the Green Archers to the UAAP title in Season 77.

Over the course of her UAAP career, Lariba has been named MVP thrice (Seasons 75, 77 and 78) and was the recipient of the Athlete of the Year award in Seasons 77 and 78.

News of Lariba’s health condition prompted an outpour of moral and financial support both from the local and international sports communities.

Now her death has sent shockwaves among Filipino fans, many of whom took to social media to offer their condolences.

Olympian table tennis hero Lariba passes away

After more than a year of battle against acute myeloid leukemia, Rio De Janeiro Olympian Ian Lariba finally found peace Sunday night.

She was 23.

The table tennis star, who made history by being the first Filipina athlete in the sport to qualify for the Olympics in 2016, was first diagnosed with AML in May 2017 after a series of blood tests.

Lariba, known by friends and family as Yanyan, went undefeated her entire five-year career in the UAAP playing for De La Salle University.

She was named Most Valuable Player in Seasons 75, 77 and 78 and was feted as UAAP Athlete of the Year in Seasons 77 and 78.

The soft-spoken and strong-willed athlete underwent a bone marrow transplant and was discharged from the hospital October last year.

She was a picture of hope as she started her road to recovery and a possible return to the sport she has always loved.

But January this year she experienced terrible headaches and underwent a head surgery.

Her condition worsened the following months.
